Ali Wong‘s SAG Awards dress may have been difficult to navigate, but it was all worth it.
“It’s Iris Van Herpen, laser cut and usually I have to adjust so much because I’m 6 feet tall, but the top fit like a glove,” Wong, 41, said. E! Live from the red carpet correspondent Laverne Cox on the red carpet of the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday, February 24. “Then I think we just had to change the bottom and my shoes. I’m no Laverne Cox, so I have to add about 10 inches. I think this is Brandon Blackwood and Bucherer’s jewelry.”
Wong wore a black and white off-the-shoulder dress with laser-cut diamonds on the sleeves. The look also included a sheer overlay with matching white diamond shapes. Wong completed her ensemble with diamond earrings and a sleek high pony.
Wong’s dress took up a significant amount of space, which raised Cox’s concerns about the SAG Award seating.
“Well, I came here… it was my first time coming in a sprinter van, and the person doing my hair said, ‘You didn’t make it unless you go to an awards ceremony in a sprinter van.'” Wong joked, before noting that daughters Mari, 8, and Nikki, 6, approved of her dress. “They love seeing me get ready. They hid under it [my skirt] and they just really like it when I’m there a lot more.”
Wong is up for the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series, nominated for her role in Beef. Other stars in the category are Uzo Aduba, Kathryn Hahn, Brie Larson And Call Powley.
While Wong was thrilled to be recognized for her on Saturday Beef performance, her children – whom she shares with her estranged husband Justin Hakuta – would rather see her do stand-up comedy instead of filming a TV or movie.
“[They] They just told me that they really prefer it when I do stand-up because when we go out, we’re together,” Wong noted on the red carpet. “Right now I’m on tour, but I’m open to it [acting more]. I feel very fortunate that I can do what stands out to me or what appeals to me.”
