Are we celebrating Christmas too early? Influencer reveals she puts up her tree straight after Bonfire Night, but comedian claims it’s ‘pointless showing off’

Good Morning Britain hosted an impassioned debate today after the show asked whether we are celebrating Christmas too early.

Comedian Mike McClean revealed that people who put up decorations early “get on his nerves”, while Cambridge content creator Sophia Ferrari-Wills said that “we all need a bit of luck.”

Traditionally, Christmas trees and decorations should go up on the first day of Advent, or the fourth Sunday before Christmas, which falls this coming weekend.

However, Sofia revealed that she put up her tree right after the night of the campfire, saying it “fuels the Christmas excitement for her kids.”

The mother-of-two added: ‘I like the atmosphere, the lights are on, you never use the high beams, and Christmas lights are another form of that.

“We all need a little happiness, we all need a little fun and that’s what people say once Halloween and bonfire night is over, there’s someone waiting for you to start it, once someone turns on the lights it all starts.

‘The children love it, it already builds up the excitement.’

While TV presenter Mike said: ‘We’re celebrating Christmas too early now. Chris Rea drives home for Christmas in July.

‘People are now putting their Brussels sprouts on the boil, it’s still too early. I went home the other day and my neighbor had a tree in the window and a tree in another window, which is just showing off: ‘Look at me, I can pay the electric bill.’

Sofia said she thinks people don’t like putting up their decorations early because they get tired of them.

She said: ‘I like a tidy house and a tidy mind, so when the decs are done too quickly it suddenly becomes overwhelming with the dust and everything people like to thoroughly clean, take out the decorations and then keep it quiet.

‘I like to see the new year fresh, so I take them out before New Year.’

Mike McClean says he puts his tree up on December 23rd and takes it down on the 27th.

He added: ‘Those lights outside people’s houses, what’s the point, you’re in the house and you don’t see it.’

While viewers took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their own opinions on when the holidays should start.

One person said: ‘People who put their decorations up early are ruining Christmas, they’re the same people who take them down after Boxing Day. It’s twelve days of Christmas, that’s long enough if you wait.’

Another said: ‘No. We put up our tree on Friday, that makes the children happy and enthusiastic and that’s reason enough for me.’

Someone else wrote: ‘Why is it the same debate every year, start it early, start it late or don’t do it at all and do what makes you happy.’

While a fourth said: ‘We don’t do anything. Absolutely zero! No lights, no decs, no tree. Waste of money and energy!’
