ASDA is going cashless at 82 more forecourts across its superstores – we reveal what the change means for you.

The retailer is eliminating staffed kiosks at dozens of drive-thru forecourts, meaning drivers will now have to “pay at the pump.”

Staff working at the kiosks will be transferred to work in the store, Asda said.

The chain had already gone cashless at more than 150 of its 300 Asda superstore petrol stations before December 2023.

But since then, more gas stations have started to do away with manned kiosks, with 14 of them having already made the switch.

Another 68 will have gone cashless by later this year. Here's everything you need to know.

When will Asda petrol stations go cashless?

Fourteen of the 82 cashless fuel stations have already made the switch, with staff moving to nearby Asda stores.

This includes locations in Wiltshire, Lancashire and Derbyshire.

Asda said its remaining 68 petrol stations will run out of cash this summer.

However, the retailer did not say exactly when in the summer.

Why are Asda petrol stations going cashless?

A number of retailers are going cashless as it makes it easier for them to process payments.

It can also reduce costs because there is no need to handle, store and transport physical cash.

Asda said it is going cashless at its 82 petrol stations because the vast majority of its customers already pay for their fuel by bank card.

A spokesperson told The Sun: “As more than 90% of all payments on our superstore forecourts are made via card or contactless device, colleagues who worked in these locations are moving into store to better serve our customers can be.”

How will this affect you?

Asda's announcement means that by the end of August this year, more than 230 of Asda's approximately 300 forecourts linked to superstores will run out of cash.

Instead, customers at these locations will have to pay for their fuel “at the pump.”

This is when you swipe your credit and debit card at the pump before filling up, without having to go to the cash register.

Under rules imposed by Visa and Mastercard, and implemented by Asda in 2021, a maximum of £99 will be held in your account between the time you swipe your card and then tap again to pay.

Once you pay, the remainder of the unused money will be returned to your bank account and you will only be charged for the value of the fuel you used.

For example, if you spend €40 on petrol, you will be reimbursed €59.

The rules have been introduced to ensure customers do not go overdrawn when buying fuel.

However, there are reports that drivers have not seen the refunded money appear in their accounts immediately and some have had to wait hours to get the money back.

If this happens to you, please refresh your banking app first to ensure the payment was processed correctly.

If this doesn't work, contact your bank. They will tell you what to do next.

The rules state that customers will have to pay up to £99 if they pay at the pump.

But if you have less than this amount in your account, you will be charged the amount you have there.
