As two of the biggest names in pop music, Billie Eilish And Olivia Rodrigo could have had a great rivalry, but instead they’ve developed a supportive friendship.

“I think everyone’s experiences are so individual,” Eilish, 21, said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times published on Tuesday, November 14. “No one’s had anyone else’s life, you know? But I do feel protective towards Olivia.’

Eilish further confessed that she even drew inspiration from 20-year-old Rodrigo for a song on her 2021 album, Happier than ever.

“I have a song called ‘Goldwing’ from my last album that’s kind of about her,” Eilish said. “I’ve never said that to anyone before. It’s not just about her. I was just thinking about her when I wrote it. She was coming, and she was younger than me, and no one had ever been younger than me.

In “Goldwing,” Eilish included lines from a hymn she sang as a child in the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus: “They’re gonna tell you what you wanna hear / Then they’re gonna disappear / I’m gonna claim you like a souvenir / Just to to sell you within a year.’

“Olivia grew up and she was just a little dainty kid,” Eilish said. “I felt so nervous. I was worried about her. She got into the acting world and people are so weird. I don’t know, I just felt very protective of her. And I have that feeling with everyone.”

Eilish further noted that she feels the same way Ariana Greenblattwho played Sasha, the daughter of America Ferrera‘s character, in Barbie. “She’s 16 and sometimes I literally want to cry for her,” Eilish admitted.

“I just see myself in all these young girls,” she continued. “And it’s the girls, man. Boys can handle themselves. They’re guys, they don’t have to deal with it like we do. I just want to keep everyone in a little glass box and never let anything touch them.”
