Boho is back and you CAN wear your embroidered waistcoat to work, say experts

FROM the seventies to the nineties there is one trend that always returns in style.

And it’s the perfect transitional trend that you can wear now and when the temperature rises.

Now that spring is here, we’re ready for a wardrobe change.

And this season, boho is back – but not as we know it.

This month, shoppers went crazy for George at Asda’s boho-inspired patchwork quilted jacket, called the ‘Mary Berry Jacket’, which costs just £28, as well as a flattering dress from River Island.

Elsewhere, the look was a roaring success on catwalks in the spring/summer and even into the autumn, with brands including Chloe and Ralph Lauren sending models down the catwalk in the trend.

Millennials will remember the days of low-slung maxi skirts, crochet boleros and, of course, disc belts with every look.

But forget all that, because the folk trend has gotten a stylish new look, so you can even wear it to the office.

Embroidered or appliqued tops, dresses and even cardigans, flowing skirts and layered jewelry all fit into the boho trend space as well as the workwear space.

Here, the Fabulous Fashion team shares how they’ll be wearing the trend both in and out of the office this season.

While I love a nice blazer and wide-leg trousers for the office, there’s something liberating about wearing boho to work.

I’ve been looking for a white maxi skirt for a while and I love this one from River Island as it goes with so many other things in my wardrobe.

I paired it with a broderie anglaise blouse, which I wear tucked in for work, because it adds some shape and makes my look more formal.

This embroidered over-the-top waistcoat adds a pop of color, while a pair of ballerina flats brighten things up.

And to top it off: this suede bag from Joe Browns fits everything I need for the office.

Who says work clothes have to be boring?

It’s that time of year when spring/summer begins to arrive on our favorite high streets, and while it may seem a little early, the clocks are going forward next week.

I always find that many of the must-have summer pieces are the ones that are released right at the start of the season.

And there seems to be an abundance of boho-inspired products in stores – think bright floral prints, fringes, long, layered dresses and beautiful white, airy fabrics.

My weekend wardrobe is full of lightweight summer dresses that don’t quite fit when it comes to workwear.

But this shirt dress from Zara ticks all the boxes.

The strap and button details accentuate its floatiness and it pairs perfectly with gold sandals and this dreamy wicker basket bag from Mango, which is roomy enough for my laptop, but just as handy when you’re out of the office, for beach towels or a picnic to bring along.

I accessorized with some metal resin bracelets and a beautiful gold chain to complete the look.

When I think of boho fashion, I definitely think of the 1990s.

Festivals and fields full of big disc belts, cheesecloth maxi skirts and Freedom at Topshop metal bib chains.

None really fit into my current wardrobe or lifestyle as I’ve pretty much hung up my festival boots.

However, when I saw the front row at Chloe’s show at Paris Fashion Week a few weeks ago, my thoughts on boho changed.

Stylish stars Liya Kebede and Georgia May Jagger wore sleek but semi-ethereal looks that you could see in a city – AKA looks that would work in the office or out.

Recreating that high street look is incredibly easy.

I’m head over heels in love with this leather jacket from Massimo Dutti because it’s incredibly soft and lightweight – which is great for summer to have on your shoulders when the temperatures drop or perfect for layering.

Plus, keep it simple with this white maxi skirt, but instead of pairing it with a cheesecloth top, for the office, opt for cotton or satin with lace detailing that gives a nod to the boho aesthetic, but is still smart enough for at work.

You can also purchase a basket bag, which has been updated in leather for this season.

This tote bag from Mango meets the requirements for woven bags, but means you can use it all year round and look a little more luxurious in a different texture.

Wear with plain and neutral sneakers or a kitten heel, and you’re good to go.

I’ve worn the boho trend more times than I can remember.

I did it in the 1980s when I bought the trend second hand, in the 1990s I shopped from designers like Chloe and Marni, and from the 1990s onwards, after I had children, I shopped boho on the big British high street.

A few weeks ago, when Chemeena Kamali showed her first collection at Chloe, we fashion people stood still and took note.

Oh, hello Biba-esque boho dresses and cool clogs.

Boho seems to be back.

But can you wear boho to the office this spring? Of course.

My solution is always to throw a blazer over it – of course you can do that too!
