Elis, 28, was stretchered off the pitch after suffering a head injury after just 34 seconds following an accidental collision with Guingamp’s Donatien Gomis.

The match stopped as Elis received treatment that lasted eight minutes while surrounded by teammates, some of whom appeared visibly upset.

The Honduran international was then taken off the field to applause from the crowd.

In a statement on social media, Bordeaux said he was then transported to hospital for treatment and medical examinations.

French exhaust L’Equipe reports that the player was conscious during the trip to the hospital.

However, according to the French radio group France BlueElis suffered “severe head trauma” after the collision.

The outlet also claims that Elis was put into an “induced coma” during transport.

He is now said to be receiving treatment from medical teams in Bordeaux, with his parents by his side.

Bordeaux went on to win the match 1–0, with manager Albert Riera dedicating the victory to Elis.

He said on social media: “W…+3… dedicated to our pantera Alberth Elis, a good recovery.

“Applause to you, to the most important football, to the actors (the players) and the fans (supporters)… this show is yours! Both together make for a strong cocktail.”

Midfielder Gaetan Weissbeck also paid tribute to Elis in his post-match interview on the club’s official channel, saying: “We dedicate this victory to Alberth Elis.”

Winger Elis has scored five times in eighteen league games for Bordeaux this season.

He started his career in his home country at CD Olimpia before moving to Monterrey, Mexico in 2016.

Elis then moved on loan to Houston before completing a permanent move in January 2018.

He then signed for Boavista before signing for Bordeaux on loan, which then turned into another permanent transfer.

From Bordeaux he was loaned out to Brest in the second half of the season, but he has secured a place at Bordeaux for this season.

He played 64 international matches for the Honduran national team, scoring 13 times.
