BOXING'S most iconic cutman is ready to join Tyson Fury's team to protect the horror cut that forced him to abandon the fight against Oleksandr Usyk.

And Jacob “Stitch” Duran – the best in the business – revealed the little tactic that will give Fury the edge in training for the rescheduled fight.

The Gypsy King was scheduled to face Usyk in the first four-belt heavyweight bout on February 17 in Saudi Arabia.

But a cut suffered while sparring just two weeks after the historic undisputed decider forced Fury to sit out until the postponed date of May 18.

Duran estimates it will take just over three months for the cut to fully heal and advised him to invest in a new headguard while sparring.

He told SunSport: “The rule of thumb for cuts is 100 days, that sort of thing.

“But yes, he has plenty of time. Every now and then he can work on so many techniques, on so many different things, without running into any problems.

“There are a lot of things he can do in the preparation and the last three or four weeks of preparation. If he wants to go fast, let him go fast.

“I would recommend headgear with a bar. Apparently what happened was the shot came up.”

Fury was sparring wearing a Paffen headguard with cheek pads at the time of the injury.

But Duran insisted on replacing it with the larger version, which has a bar across the face to protect the nose, which could be key to protecting the cut.

He said, “Yes. It is not too bad! It's more the bad timing than anything.”

Fury suffered a catastrophic cut in his win over Otto Wallin in 2019, but somehow fought on to win a points decision.

As a result, he needed 47 stitches and also called on Duran's experience and expertise for his next two fights.

And now Duran is set to rejoin Fury's camp in an attempt to save the WBC champion's skin once again.

He said: “That would be a great opportunity. But I've been in this game for so long that I'm like a surfer: I just ride the waves.

“If it happens, it would make sense from a business standpoint because I know Bob Arum asked to work with him the first time I worked with him.

“Does it make sense? Yes, it makes more sense than from anything else and from technology.”
