A young man has been taken to hospital in a critical condition after falling into a hole and becoming buried in the sand on a popular island north of Brisbane.

Emergency services rushed to Bribie Island shortly before 2 p.m. on Saturday and could only reach the scene via the beach.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed paramedics were still treating the seriously injured patient at the scene two hours later.

The RACQ Lifeflight helicopter landed on the beach as close as possible to the accident scene with a rescue doctor and a flight paramedic on board.
