A furious debate has emerged over whether or not children should be allowed in airport lounges, after a passenger described a very testing experience.

In a post titled 'Children in the [Delta] Sky Club…', one Reddit user explained that they 'generally' don't have a problem with kids in the lounges.

But during a recent trip to New York's La Guardia Airport, they were unimpressed by the behavior of some children and decided to vent their frustrations.

Commenting on the experience, they wrote: 'When your kids are running around like banshees, getting in the way, cutting in and out of the food lines and putting their little paws on everything, screaming and singing, will you please just… them take it to one of LGA's other beautiful new eateries?

“If I can hear your kid all the way from the other side of the living room, you're not doing it right.”

The Reddit post quickly gained traction, with more than 200 comments in 24 hours.

Many commenters agreed with the original poster, noting that it is the parent or guardian's responsibility to keep their children under control.

One, a grandparent, wrote, “My grandchildren travel with me regularly and behave because they understand that their behavior is reflected directly on me.

'The whole problem is that parents (the adults) are not parents.

'It is no different at the Sky Club [lounges] or on board, then go to your local restaurant and not be able to enjoy a meal because a child is acting out, causing a nuisance and the parent(s) are not correcting the bad behavior. We've probably all experienced that situation.'

Another commenter with three children revealed how they take their children to airport lounges, but they have strategies in place to ensure their children don't impact other travelers.

They explained: 'We are bringing our three children ([aged] 7, 6 and 3) in the lounge all the time. THi, I've been going with us since we started traveling with them (when our oldest was just under a year old).

'We are the family that does their best to find the quietest corner. Our kids wear headphones and are always fed with an adult… I've never understood why some parents let their kids run wild. We are all tired.

'Children can be unpredictable and allowed to take up space. HOWEVER, there is a standard of behavior in an “upscale” environment. And yes, we have had to do 'shifts' taking our kids to run up and down the terminal during longer layovers.”

And one vocal Reddit user spoke out in favor of parents with children using airport lounges, writing: 'You should use the damn Sky Club, good grief.

'Parenting is hard enough, don't hinder yourself by denying yourself the resources you are entitled to.'

However, one commenter bucked this trend and stated that lounges are not suitable for children.

They opined: 'I often wonder why parents take their children to places that are clearly intended for adults who have virtually nothing to offer their children. Isn't it the easiest solution to limit children altogether?

'It would be different if Delta had a children's area with toys and a children's menu, a kind of glorified family waiting area. You know, like at the gate. Then I just wouldn't worry about the lounge. But it's sold to us as a premium experience.”

And from the same camp, someone else wrote: 'I especially hate it when they let their kids watch movies on an iPad at full volume without headphones. NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR THAT!!”

Like most airport lounges, the Delta Sky Club is open to travelers of all ages, but travelers under 18 must be accompanied by a “responsible, supervising adult.”
