DISCORD introduces a major upgrade that lets you play loads of new games right in the app.
The popular chat app is loved by gamers as a way to talk to friends and share live streams – but it’s about to get even more powerful.
Discord will let app makers create mini-games that live in the world app.
The app has already offered a small selection of in-app gamesbut now every developer can create their own file.
This should mean a huge influx of in-app games – known as Activities – that anyone can play on their chat servers.
Discord will make the update live on March 18, so the games should start to trickle out in the coming months.
“There are a lot of Discord developers who have their eyes on Activities and are wondering when they might create their own,” Discord explains.
“Discord developers can build new games and experiences that can be played directly on the platform with our new Embedded App SDK.”
At this point, the apps and games will be limited to living on specific servers.
But Discord has also promised to try out a way to add games to your account.
It allows you to take your favorite games with you via servers, group chats and DMs.
“App developers can decide in advance whether their app is server-only or whether people can add their apps to their accounts,” Discord said.
CHAT IS AWESOME
Discord is a chat app that lets you send messages, make voice or video calls, share files, and even live stream your screen.
It’s a lot like the workplace app Slack, but Discord has become a big hit with gamers.
Users can set up their own servers and even dedicate them to specific hobbies or interests.
Discord was launched in 2015 and now has an estimated 175 million monthly active users.
It is available on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, iPadOS, Linux and also in web browsers.
