Matt played the role of the eleventh incarnation of The Doctor from 2010 to 2013 and also fronted the show’s 50th Anniversary Special.

Millie added: “I found it so magical to watch and it was just so nostalgic to rewatch the episodes leading up to my audition and so I kept rewatching some of the stuff and I thought if I didn’t get this role get, I won’ I’ll never be able to watch this show again.’

Discussing the upcoming special, Millie added: “It’s a weird Christmas I will say, I didn’t expect this to happen to me so I’m definitely bracing myself.

“I can’t say too much, but I’m really excited for everyone to see it because the trailer doesn’t tell half of the magic that’s to come.”

She also discussed a recent preview in which Ruby and The Doctor were confronted by an army of goblins – and their enormous king – aboard a ship, in their quest to rescue a kidnapped baby.

“I mean, that’s just insane, isn’t it? The best thing about Dr Who is that they built that thing. It’s really not CGI, so when we were on set I ended up thinking it was kind of cute.

“I think I was delirious at the end of the day. We really enjoyed working with the goblins, all the little goblins weren’t there, they sit on sticks. But the Goblin King was real!’

Discussing her character Ruby, she added: “Those two as a couple, I’m biased, but I love them very much. Ruby and the Doctor are very similar to mine and Ncuti’s relationship in real life.
