Dominic West was very adamant about his son Senan stepping back from his role as Prince William on The crown – but it may have caused some friction in the family.
‘He’s furious [and] I can’t believe it,” West, 54, joked We weekly on Sunday, January 7, on the red carpet of the Golden Globes in Beverly Hills, California. ‘He will never forgive me. I will never forgive myself either.”
West, who was nominated Sunday for best actor in a drama series, starred King Charles III (before his ascension in 2022) on Netflix The crown for the last two seasons. In season 5, Senan, 16, played young William before West had him step back the following year.
“I didn’t really feel like doing the scene at Balmoral and telling a boy that his mother has died,” says West, who shares Senan with his wife Catherine FitzGeraldtold Radio times December 2023. “They invited Senan back because he was doing so well, and he was great, but I was a little bit concerned about that. It was unfair of me because he wanted to do it, but I honestly wouldn’t have wanted that.”
West – who also shares son Francis and daughters Dora and Christabel with FitzGerald, as well as daughter Martha with ex Polly Astor – was concerned about Senan filming the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death. (Season 6 highlighted the final days of Diana, played by Elizabeth Debicki, prior to her fatal car accident in 1997.)
Senan was replaced by actors as William Rufus Kampa And Ed McVey in parts 1 and 2 of The crown‘s final season, respectively. The final episodes followed William’s early courtship with the current wife Princess Kate Middleton (Meg Bellamy). West, meanwhile, continued to play Charles.
“It was great,” West said Us on the Sunday of his term of office The crown. “Lots of actors [who] I really respect and have a nice time with…and then [filming] in beautiful places and wearing beautiful clothes and talking with funny accents. It was amazing.”
Despite enjoying his time on the Netflix drama, West acknowledged certain challenges in playing the future King of England.
“I guess the fact that they’re real and you’re dealing with people’s lives that are very traumatic at the time,” he said. “And I think we were a little sensitive about that.”
However, royal protocol stopped at the end of the working day.
“People [would] bowing all day when I was on set, and then I would go home and my kids wouldn’t bow to me anymore,” West joked to Us. “That’s the best thing about being royal.”
