Ollie Pope also played with the bat as he smashed a whopping 196 runs in his second innings to give England a chance.

But India were still favorites when they returned to the crease, needing just 231 runs to win.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja had all scored big to help India to a total of 436 in their first innings – but all failed to repeat those blows the second time around.

Hartley took the wicket of Jaiswal before removing Shubman Gill for a duck.

Jack Leach and Joe Root also took a wicket each, while captain Ben Stokes took out Jadeja with a brilliant piece of fielding.

Wicketkeeper Ben Foakes also played a key role as he defeated Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Siraj to seal the victory.
