German hospital ‘under siege’ as woman, 65, barricades herself in room and ’causes flares’, leading to massive evacuation – The Sun

GERMAN special forces stormed a hospital this evening after a woman reportedly broke in and set off fireworks.

Smoke was seen coming from a room in the Luisenhospital Aachen when the 65-year-old barricaded himself and caused a siege.

A helicopter circled above the hospital as patients were evacuated and elite armed police units were removed the SEK withdrawn.

German officers told The Sun: “We are now on the scene with special units and also with fire brigade troops.”

It is unclear whether the woman is armed and whether there are any injured people or hostages at the 378-bed hospital in West Germany.

Police have not confirmed whether the ‘suspicious person’ is alone or poses a threat to others, but a cordon has been put in place and locals are being told to avoid the area.

Roads have been blocked and trains canceled as authorities tackle the standoff, which continues.

Cologne police, who are leading the operation, said: “According to current information, a woman (65) entered the hospital in the afternoon.

“Shortly afterwards, employees noticed smoke coming from near the woman.

“The 65-year-old has now barricaded himself in a room.

“The surrounding rooms have been evacuated.

“Special forces are on site.”

The SEK was founded in 1974 in response to increasing terrorist threats and organized crime activities in Germany.

They specialize in hostage situations, kidnappings, raids and dealing with barricaded suspects.
