The reward can be claimed via the Octopus app, but customers can also get discounted cinema tickets and discounted National Trust passes.

The deal was shared in the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group on Facebook, which has more than 2.3 million members.

One happy user said: “Fantastic offer on the Octopus Energy app – if you go to your Octopus page (icon on the bottom right of the app home page, but you need to sign up for Ocotoplus points) there is an offer for a weekly Gregg's hot drink.'

“You can activate it once a week and use it by Sunday! It says they'll run it until the end of the year!”

The post attracted more than 170 comments, with numerous group users tagging their friends and family to tell them to take advantage of the deal.

One user said: “Free coffee is my favorite coffee.”

“Now I can have a bacon sandwich and a hot drink together!!!” said another.

A third user said: “I don't have the app yet but I will get it now.”

The energy supplier explains the full deal on its website.

To be eligible for Octoplus, customers must receive electricity from Octopus Energy, have a working electric smart meter (this allows them to receive half-hourly readings) and pay by direct debit.

Business customers and smart prepayment customers can also become members of 'Octoplus'.

Octopus Energy customers can get free weekly coffee from Greggs, weekly cinema tickets from Odeon and quarterly day passes from the National Trust and the National Trust for Scotland.

You can claim your rewards in the Octopus Energy app, which you can download from the Google Play Store or Apple Store.

You must be signed up for Octopus to receive the rewards.

Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Chief Product and Marketing Officer at Octopus Energy Group, comments: “Our customers already get paid for adjusting their energy consumption during mains stresses, and now they can even get free drinks and cinema tickets on top of that.

Other freebies you can get

Energy companies are giving out free electric blankets and money-saving gadgets this winter to help customers keep their bills low.

Ovo Energy launched a £40 million customer support package for its customers this winter.

Thousands of customers struggling to pay bills will have access to free energy-saving items such as electric blankets and mattress toppers, LED light bulbs, SMART sockets and free boiler maintenance.

Octopus Energy is handing out free electric blankets to help customers stay warm while bills remain high.

The energy companies' customer support program is discretionary, meaning those most in need get the blankets, such as the elderly and those with specific medical conditions.

You'll have to call Octopus to see if you can get one.

How to get help with your energy bill

Many energy companies, including the 'big six', are offering a Warm Home discount this winter.

This is a one-off deduction on the energy bill that is usually applied automatically and the amount can vary per company.

The Cold Weather Payment is also paid to eligible people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

You'll get £25 for each seven-day period when the temperature is zero degrees Celsius or below between November 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024.

Many councils also offer living expenses payments to people in need through the Household Support Fund.

Check your municipality's website to see if you are eligible.
