Former commercial litigator Peter Antonucci, 64, of New York, compared the enormous 650-foot, 12-deck residential ship to a college dorm.

The World launched in 2002, promising passengers a ‘residential lifestyle’ luxury adventure that was previously unthinkable”.

The ship houses 165 super-luxury apartments, from stylish studios to three-bedroom apartments. The ship travels to more than 100 destinations annually and is shrouded in secrecy.

The apartments reportedly cost between $2 million (£1.6 million) and $15 million (£11.9 million) each, excluding annual ownership fees, and you must be invited by one resident – and seconded by another – to to buy.

An individual net worth of at least $10 million (£7.9 million) is reportedly mandatory for residents.

Ex-passenger Peter and his wife Tami bought their first apartment on the Cruise ship for about $1.6 million in 2014 after previously enjoying a “trial trip” where they came to love the crew and the boat’s routine.

They switched suites several times during their residency before leaving in 2019 “sick of the gossip, the rumors and the cattiness”, and having “seen the world a few times”.

Peter, a member of The World’s board of directors, has now revealed what really happens on the world’s most elite cruise ship.

He told the Daily email: “All extreme behavioral violations are brought to the attention of the board, so that’s what it comes down to.

“I knew where all the skeletons could be found – I knew who slept with who, who attacked who, who stole… And of course I have two eyes and two ears. You see things and you feel things intuitively.”

I have the best job on the cruise ship – I sleep in £8,000 guest suites, drink cocktails and take part in karaoke, but there is a downside

Peter said the ship’s “dramas and stories and subplots” developed over months and years.

He explained, “As residents, we sat lustfully watching them brew. Many people on the ship were entranced by the gossip.

“The ship was driven more by hearsay than hearsay diesel fuel.”

There were parties aboard the ship “every day,” he claimed, and much of what he saw was “somewhat analogous to a fraternity house.”

The former lawyer added: “Here you have a small group of very successful, entitled people floating around in a steel basin in the middle of the ocean.

“When you’re at sea for six or seven days, people just go from bar to bar, and what could go wrong?

“Did you beat people up? Of course. Were there people who dived into the pool fully clothed? Yes. Did they stay fully clothed? Not always.

‘Did you let people do it? drugs? Of course you did it. Anytime you have a group of people, you’re going to have things like that.”

Life on The World was similar to what viewers might have seen HBO‘s dark comedy The White LotusPeter said, as “entitled owners shouted at staff” and “inappropriate, barely clad” guests “grinded together on the pool deck.”

He further claimed that guests would engage in heated arguments, throw punches and be embroiled in affairs for years – sometimes with members of the crew.

Reprimanding people who pay $5 million for an apartment and $500,000 a year in maintenance costs was a difficult task, but Peter said there were “protocols” for dealing with troublemakers.

The ex-lawyer has written three novels about a fictional ship since leaving The World.

A spokesperson for The World told the Daily Mail: “We had previously been in contact with Mr Antonucci, who has assured us in writing that his works have no connection with The World or its inhabitants, and that his publications are fictional works of art about a fictional ship.

“We wish him every success with his creative works of fiction, which we understand have no relationship with De Wereld or any of its inhabitants.”
