Idris Elba reveals the surprising way he befriended Prince Harry
Idris Elba has revealed that he and Prince Harry became friends after saying “Yo” to each other in nightclubs.
The British actor and DJ told the Smartless podcast, “I was DJing in all these clubs where Harry would show up and he was like, ‘Yo!’ and I’m like “Yo!” And at one point he thought, “Listen man, I’m getting married.” I was like, “Yo! That’s great.”
“He says, ‘I want you to be a DJ.'” Harry continued with a request. “I was like, ‘I don’t make requests!’” Elba recalled.
He then attended the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in May 2018, and then DJed at the reception at Frogmore House.
In March 2023, the London-based actor, who has had a very successful career in the music industry and played nightclubs and festivals in Ibiza, even revealed who was the best dancer at the party.

He told ET Canada: ‘I think Meghan was the one who really enjoyed letting it go. You know, she was really… She was just having fun. It was her wedding. So she had the best time.’
The Luther actor previously revealed it was the Duchess, 41, who provided him with a list of all the songs to be played on the big day.
Harry and Meghan tied the knot in front of millions around the world at St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle on May 19, 2018.
In addition to their families, the guest list expanded to include a number of celebrities, including the Beckhams, George Clooney, and Oprah Winfrey.
In a previous interview, Idris revealed that he thought Prince Harry was “joking” when he offered him the gig.
Speaking on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, he spoke about how the Duke came to offer him the job, saying, “So Harry and I hung out a few times through his dad’s [Prince Charles] charity – The Prince’s Trust – that helped me when I was a young actor.
“Harry came to a few parties where I was a DJ and he said, ‘What are you doing [May 19]?”‘
The actor explained that he was stunned when approached for the enviable role: “I didn’t tell him anything and then he asked if I wanted to DJ at his wedding… I thought, is this a joke?”

He added, “That was an incredible experience. I curated the music for that night, so it was a lot of pressure, but it was great. An ambience.’
Among Meghan’s requested songs for the event were Still by Dr. Dre and Whitney Houston’s classic, I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
In their Netflix series, Harry and Meghan shared some photos from their wedding album.
In a clip about the 2018 reception, Meghan said, “I just wanted the music to be fun. Even our first dance.’
She turns to her husband and asks, “Song of 1000 dances?” A thousand dances? I always misunderstand.’
The Duchess sings lyrics from the 1960s soul hit Land Of A Thousand Dances, which the couple chose as their first dance. It was the first time they publicly announced which song they were going for.
