Johnny Depp is 60 after making a comeback following his ugly trial with ex Amber Heard

Hollywood icon Johnny Depp turned 60-years-old on Friday.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean actor is hitting this milestone after a major comeback during the Cannes Film Festival in France that took place in late May.

At the festival the father-of-two – he shares Lily-Rose Depp and Jack with ex Vanessa Paradis – was greeted with open arms by his fans.

Depp and his castmates received a seven-minute standing ovation during the screening of the French-language film Jeanne du Barry.

The former 21 Jump Street heartthrob became teary-eyed during the praise.

This comes after years of battling his ex-wife Amber Heard over savage abuse claims. He was also involved in a very public defamation trial with the actress, which he won.

In May, it was claimed that Depp doesn’t ‘feel much further need for Hollywood’.

The star is back on screen as King of France Louis XV in new film Jeanne Du Barry, and he has addressed past comments in 2021 when he claimed he felt ‘boycotted’ by the industry.

Speaking in a press conference at Cannes Film Festival, he said: ‘Did I feel boycotted by Hollywood? Well, you’d have to not have a pulse to feel at that point like this was all just a weird joke.

‘Of course, when you’re asked to resign from a film you’re doing because of something that’s merely a bunch of vowels and consonants floating in the air… Do I feel boycotted now? No, not at all.

‘But I don’t feel boycotted, because I don’t think about Hollywood. I don’t feel much further need for Hollywood — I don’t know about you.’

Depp – who admitted it had been tough for him to move on as a public figure due to the legal battle – also suggested he was disillusioned with Hollywood as a whole.

He explained: ‘It’s a very strange, funny time when everyone would love to be themselves, but they can’t because they must fall in line with the person in front of them. If you want to follow that line, be my guest. I’ll be on the other side.’

Johnny, who successfully sued Amber for defamation in a lawsuit relating to an op-ed she had written about being a victim of domestic abuse, received a seven-minute standing ovation as he arrived at a screening of the new movie.

He has shrugged off the idea that his new role – which sees him speak entirely in French – is a ‘comeback’.

He added: ‘I keep wondering about the word ‘comeback,’ because I didn’t go anywhere. I live about 45 minutes away from here, in fact.

‘Maybe people stopped calling out of whatever their fear was at the time, but I didn’t go nowhere. I’ve been sitting around.

‘Comeback’ is almost like I’m going to come out and do a tap dance — dance my best and hope you approve. That’s the notion. It’s a bizarre mystery.’

This spring has also been painful in another way.

In late May, Depp rescheduled a series of concerts after suffering an ankle fracture.

The star has taken to social media to reveal news of his injury and to confirm rescheduled dates for the Hollywood Vampires’ tour of the US.

Johnny – who stars in the band alongside Alice Cooper and Joe Perry – wrote on Instagram: ‘My dear friends, I am sorry to say that I have fractured my ankle, which is a drag!!! It began as a hairline break but somewhere between Cannes and the Royal Albert Hall it got worse rather than better. Several medical professionals have strongly suggested I avoid any and all activity for the moment and so am sadly unable to travel at this time.

‘To that end, the guys and I are very sorry to miss you in New Hampshire, Boston and New York but fear not, I promise we will bring an amazing show to all of you in Europe and bring our absolute best to the East Coast later this summer and make it up to those who have paid for those shows!!!

‘Again, sincerest apologies. All my love and respect … J.D. x (sic)’

How the star-studded relationship between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp fell apart amid claims of violence and abuse

Johnny Depp’s high-profile libel claim against the publisher of The Sun is over allegations he was violent towards his ex-wife Amber Heard during their relationship – claims the Hollywood star vehemently denies.

The pair met in around 2011 on the set of The Rum Diary, a film adaption of a novel by Depp’s friend Hunter S Thompson, before they started living together in around 2012.

Here is a timeline of the key events in their relationship and the bitter legal battle that has ensued.

Johnny Depp seen in July 2020

Amber Heard seen in July 2020

Battle:  Johnny Depp and Amber Heard (both pictured at court in London) went to war in a very nasty court case

2013

– March 8: Depp allegedly tries to set fire to a painting by Heard’s ex-partner Tasya van Ree before he is said to have attacked her for the first time, which the actor denies.

2015

– February 3: The couple marry in a private ceremony at their home in Los Angeles.

– March 3-5: The key incident in The Sun’s defence, the three-day trip to Australia has been described by Heard as a ‘three-day hostage situation’ in which Depp was allegedly physically and verbally abusive while drinking heavily and taking drugs.

Depp denies the allegations and says Heard lost her temper after a conversation about a post-nuptial agreement.

– April 21: The couple arrive in Australia with their pet Yorkshire Terriers Boo and Pistol, which they did not declare to customs officials in Queensland. Heard was charged later with bringing the dogs into the country illegally – the charges were later dropped and the pair later recorded a bizarre video apologising for bringing their dogs to Australia.

2016

– Around May 22: The pair separated, Heard claims after an incident at their LA penthouse in which Depp allegedly became very angry and destroyed property with a bottle of champagne.

– May 23: Heard files petition for the dissolution of their marriage.

– May 27: Heard applies for a temporary domestic violence restraining order, which prevents Depp from contacting her.

– August 16: The estranged couple reach an agreement concerning the dissolution of their marriage. Heard later donates her seven million US dollar (£5.5 million) settlement to charity.

2017

– January 13: The couple are formally divorced.

2018

– April 27: The column by The Sun’s then executive editor Dan Wootton is published online at around 10pm. Under the headline ‘Gone Potty – How can JK Rowling be ‘genuinely happy’ casting wife beater Johnny Depp in the new Fantastic Beasts film?’, Mr Wootton asked if the Harry Potter author had been ‘blinded by a personal friendship’ with Depp.

The piece also quoted two alleged victims of disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein, which Depp says was included to ‘finish his career’.

– April 28: The following day, the online article is amended to remove the words ‘wife beater’ from the headline, which was not included in the print edition.

– June 1: Depp files claim his libel against News Group Newspapers. His written claim, filed a few weeks later, claims the article ’caused serious harm to (his) personal and professional reputation’ and also caused him ‘significant distress and embarrassment’.

– December 18: The Washington Post publishes an op-ed by Heard which did not mention Depp by name, but said that the actress ‘became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out’.

2019

– February 27: Depp fights off a bid to halt his English legal action after The Sun applies for his claim to be ‘stayed unless and until’ the star confirmed in writing that he would not sue Heard if she participated in a forthcoming trial.

– March 1: Depp files a libel case against Heard in Virginia, blaming the Washington Post piece for Depp being dropped from the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise and claiming that Heard was the one who had been abusive towards him.

2020

– February 26: Johnny Depp attends the High Court in London for a preliminary hearing ahead of a trial which was due to begin the following month. The star heard NGN’s barrister Adam Wolanski read out texts sent by Depp, including one from November 2013 to actor Paul Bettany, in which Depp wrote: ‘Let’s burn Amber.’

He also wrote: ‘Let’s drown her before we burn her!!! I will f*** her burnt corpse afterwards to make sure she is dead.’

– March 20: The trial, which was due to begin on March 23, is postponed due to the global coronavirus crisis. NGN’s lawyers had claimed Depp wanted to delay the trial ‘because he’s a coward and because he knows he’s going to lose’, which was denied by Depp’s legal team.

– April 8: Mr. Justice Nicol rules that parts of Heard’s evidence, relating to allegations of sexual violence, will be heard in private.

– May 13: The court gives permission for Depp’s former partners Vanessa Paradis and Winona Ryder – who both say Depp was ‘never violent’ to them – to give evidence. Heard’s former personal assistant Kate James is also permitted to give evidence.

– June 25: NGN asks the court to throw out Depp’s claim just two weeks before trial over the star’s failure to disclose text messages of him apparently trying to buy drugs in Australia in 2015. The publisher’s lawyers say Depp deliberately withheld text messages they say show him trying to obtain ‘MDMA and other narcotics’.

– June 29: Mr. Justice Nicol rules that Depp did breach a court order by not disclosing documents from separate libel proceedings against Heard in the US – which include the text messages. But Depp’s lawyers argue that it would be ‘wholly disproportionate’ to strike out the actor’s libel claim.

– July 2: The High Court rules Depp’s claim can go ahead after granting his application for ‘relief from sanctions’ for the breach of a court order.

– July 4: The trial judge, Mr. Justice Nicol refuses an application by Depp’s lawyers to exclude Heard from court until she gives evidence.

– July 7: The three-week trial finally begins at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, with witnesses set to include Depp’s former partners Vanessa Paradis and Winona Ryder as well as several of Heard’s friends who say they were present when Depp was abusive.

– July 28: The trial ends after 16 days.

– November 2: Depp loses his High Court libel action with Mr. Justice Nicol ruling that NGN had proved what was in the article to be ‘substantially true’.

– November 6: Depp announces that he has been asked by Warner Bros. to resign from Fantastic Beasts 3 and he has ‘respected that and agreed to that request’.

– November 25: Mr. Justice Nicol denies Depp’s request for permission to appeal against his ruling at the Court of Appeal. The judge also orders the actor to make an initial payment of almost £630,000 (around $850,000) to NGN for the publisher’s legal fees.

 – December 7: Lawyers for Depp file grounds of appeal with the Court of Appeal arguing that the Hollywood star ‘did not receive a fair trial’ and asking for the judgement to be ‘set aside’ and a new trial ordered.

 2021

– February 1:  The Court of Appeal orders Depp’s application for permission to appeal should be considered at a hearing in March.

– March 18 – Depp’s application for permission to appeal will be heard by the Court of Appeal

– March 25 – The Court of Appeal refuses permission to appeal the ruling stating that Depp’s attempt to overturn the decision had ‘no real prospect of success.’

– July 1: Heard announces she has become a mother to a baby girl born using a surrogate. The actress reveals her daughter Oonagh Paige was born on April 8

2022

– Depp’s defamation case against Heard over her Washington Post Op-Ed is scheduled to go to trial in April

Johnny subsequently confirmed the rescheduled tour dates for the end of July.

There was an announcement on the Hollywood Vampires’ Instagram account.

The band said in a statement: ‘We are sad to share that the Hollywood Vampires will be rescheduling our three US tour dates this coming week. Johnny has sustained a painful injury to his ankle following his recent appearances and has been advised by his doctor not to travel. He is devastated by this turn of events, but looks forward to resting up so all four Vampires can bring their absolute best to the tour in Europe.’

On Thursday, he was reunited with his Hollywood Vampires bandmates in Bucharest, Romania.

He was serenaded by fans in honor of his birthday.

And the icon paid tribute to friend Jeff Beck following his sudden death at age 78. Beck died on January 11 after contracting bacterial meningitis.

This comes after Disney have not ruled out a potential Pirates of the Caribbean return for Depp.

The actor was axed as Captain Jack Sparrow by the company in 2018 in a bid to bring a ‘new energy’ to the franchise but Disney Studios Motion Picture president Sean Bailey hasn’t shut down the prospect of the actor coming back for a sixth movie.

In an interview with The New York Times newspaper, Bailey said: ‘We think we have a really good, exciting story that honours the films that have come before but also has something new to say.’

Quizzed on whether Depp would be part of the movie, Bailey answered by saying that the studio was ‘noncommittal at this point’.

Jerry Bruckheimer produced all the movies in the franchise and revealed last year that he would ‘love’ to see Depp return to the series after winning his defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard – although he insisted that Disney would have the final say on the decision.

The 79-year-old movie producer told The Hollywood Reporter: ‘You’d have to ask them. I can’t answer that question. I really don’t know.

‘I would love to have him in the movie. He’s a friend, a terrific actor, and it’s unfortunate that personal lives creep into everything we do.’

Bruckheimer – who has produced blockbusters including ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ and ‘Top Gun’ – also confirmed that the character of Captain Jack Sparrow would never be killed off.

He said: ‘You can’t. We tried to kill him. It didn’t work.’

Johnny had mentioned during last year’s trial that he was saddened not to get the chance to say farewell to Jack Sparrow after almost 20 years of playing the pirate.

The Edward Scissorhands star said: ‘My feeling was that these characters should be able to have their proper goodbye, as it were.

‘A franchise can only last for so long, and there’s a way to end a franchise like that, and I thought that the characters deserved to have their way out, to end the franchise on a very good note. I planned on continuing until it was time to stop.’

But sources have told DailyMail.com that he really is not interested at this point in returning to the role.

Born in Kentucky and brought up all over the U.S., Depp is one of four children of John Christopher Depp Sr, an itinerant civil engineer, and Betty Sue, who passed away in 2016.

The actor made his acting debut, at 21, in the hit 1984 slasher film, A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Following the film’s success, he went on to star in Cry Baby, Edward Scissorhands, Blow, The Tourist, Alice in Wonderland and more.

Despite becoming a bona fide movie star, the father-of-two revealed last summer that he only took up acting to pay his rent as he pursued his initial dream of becoming a musician.

Four years after receiving a guitar as a birthday present from his mom, Betty Sue Palmer, the performer said he dropped out of high school to become a rocker.

During a 2011 interview with DailyMail.com, he recalled talking his mother into buying him ‘a Decca electric guitar for $25.’

‘I stole a chord book from a store — I slipped it down my trousers — and then I locked myself in my room, played the guitar and didn’t come out for years. I don’t recall puberty or anything else. Just playing the guitar,’ he admitted.

He eventually joined a band, called called The Kids in 1980, which was later renamed Six Gun Method.

By 20, he packed his bags and moved to Los Angeles with the group, following years of playing in clubs in Flordia as a young teen.

‘I needed to pay rent and somebody told me, ‘Why don’t you go meet an agent, my agent is with Nick Cage.’ So she sent me in an audition for something and I got it,’ he recalled during a radio interview on Jonesy’s Jukebox.

That year, he wed his first wife, Lori Anne Allison, a well-known makeup artist in Hollywood.

The duo’s short-lived marriage only lasted two years, but they have remained amicable.

In April, she made a rare remark about her former spouse, in regards to his legal battle against Heard, which she said made her break ‘down several times.’

‘It just broke my heart that somebody could do that to him,’ she said on an episode of Popcorned Planet, after noting that he ‘is very private, which is why’ she doesn’t typically do interviews.

In 1998, while filming The Ninth Gate in in France, he went on to meet his longtime partner, Vanessa Paradis, who he dated from 1998 to 2012.

She is the mother of his two children, Lily-Rose Depp, 24, and Jack Depp, 21.

JOHNNY DEPP’S DYNAMIC CAREER

Johnny Depp is one of Hollywood’s A list actors.

The versatile star first rose to fame with 21 Jump Street in 1987.

He then moved into films with the offbeat Cry-Baby in 1990.

Then he became a successful Hollywood career in films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Donnie Brasco and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

He was also known for starring roles in films including Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Charlie Chocolate Factory, The Lone Ranger and The Rum Diary.

He has often won praise for his charm and tender approach to complex characters.

Depp has said that he looks for tough parts: ‘There’s a drive in me that won’t allow me to do certain things that are easy. I can weigh all the options, but there’s always one thing that goes: “Johnny, this is the one.” And it’s always the most difficult – it’s always the one that will cause the most trouble.’
