Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl 2024 Parade Shooting: What You Need to Know

Shortly after the Kansas City Chiefs completed their Super Bowl parade, a shooting occurred.

Nearly a million people gathered on Wednesday, February 14, to celebrate the Chiefs' victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. Patrick Mahomes and woman Brittany Mahomes, Travis Kelcecoach Andy Reid and more members of the team partied along the nearly two-mile route through the streets of Kansas City. Kelce's girlfriend, Taylor Swiftdid not attend the event as she was heading to Australia for the next leg Eras tour.

After marching through the streets and on floats, the team arrived at the victory rally where several team members and staff addressed the crowd. After the speeches concluded, police reported that shots were fired “west of Union Station” and that “several people were affected.”

Where was the shooting?

The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department wrote via X that “shots [had] fired around Union Station” and warned the public to evacuate the area. The department confirmed multiple victims were struck after shots were fired near a garage near the end of the parade route.

Have the suspects been caught?

According to images via social mediaseveral attendees tackled an alleged suspect. Several media outlets originally reported that “two armed people” had been arrested.

Police chief Stacey Graven later shared during a press conference on Wednesday that a third suspect had been arrested and that the situation was an “active investigation.”

Authorities later revealed that two of the three suspects in the shooting, who have yet to be publicly identified, are minors. A total of 23 people were injured, half of whom were under the age of 17.

Were there any casualties?

The Kansas City, Missouri, fire department revealed that one person was killed and 22 injured, with seven people suffering “life-threatening” injuries, according to CNN.

A spokesperson for Children's Mercy subsequently said the hospital was treating 12 patients from the meeting, 11 of whom were children and nine had gunshot wounds. NFL reporter James Palmer.

The last victim was released from hospital within three days. “We have great news to share: all patients have been discharged from Children's Mercy,” a hospital representative said Entertainment tonight on February 17.

What did the chefs say?

Several players, including Mahomes, Dru Calm down, Justin Reid And Donovan Smith shared their prayers for the victims.

“Please join me in praying for all the victims of this heinous act,” Tranquil wrote Wednesday via X. “Pray that doctors and first responders will have steady hands and that everyone will experience complete healing.”

The Chiefs organization released a statement that same day.

“We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside Union Station at the end of today's parade and rally,” the message said. “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and all of Kansas City.

The team said they were in “close communication” with the mayor's office and the police department and thanked first responders for their assistance.

Have charges been filed?

On Friday, February 16, two juveniles were charged with resisting arrest and other weapons-related charges in connection with the mass shooting. According to the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office Jean Peters BakkerThe suspects are being held in a juvenile detention center.
