The news is by your side.

Do you want late snow? Then aim high! Warm winters mean melting slopes, but these snow-sure resorts are perfect for spring

Photos of barren slopes at lower altitude ski resorts have many worried lately about the remainder of the Alpine ski season.

In the village of the popular seaside resort of Megève in France – at 1,110 meters (3,640 feet) – no snow was visible on webcams.

It’s a tough situation for the lower resorts, with temperatures reaching 16 degrees Celsius in Megève, although a weather front will bring new snow this week, according to Weathertoski.co.uk.

With the snow melting at the lower resorts, it has never been more important to get some late season skiing

That said, the most snow is expected above 1,500 meters (4,920 feet).

So where you go for late season skiing has never been more important. Here we round up some of the very highest (and most ‘snow-sure’) resorts.

RAISED IN FRANCE

Val Thorens is the highest ski village in France, with reliable snow cover and slopes linked to the Three Valleys ski area. Expect extensive skiing until the resort closes on May 5. The slopes reach a height of 3,230 meters (10,600 feet).

Book It: Seven nights at Tourotel de Val Thorens from £891 per person self-catering on April 6, including Stansted-Geneva Jet2 flights and transfers (heidi.com).

Located in Austria’s highest municipality, Obergurgl is known for its good snow until April, its wide slopes suitable for all levels and its famously extravagant après-ski – especially in the raucous Nederhutte bar. The slopes rise to 3,080 meters (10,100 feet).

SWISS SNOW BANKER

Swanky Zermatt is a must-visit that you should visit at least once in your life. The village is located quite low, but the slopes reach up to 3,820 meters (12,530 feet), the highest slopes in Europe. Webcams showed deep snow at the resorts this week. The lifts are open until April 23.

SUPER RELIABLE SAAS-FEE

Enjoy this charming, high-altitude Swiss resort with lifts up to 3,500 meters (11,480 feet). Much of the ski area is above 2,500 meters (8,200 feet), so you can expect decent snow conditions late in the season.

This Austrian resort has two weather fronts bringing snow from the north and west.

So even though the highest slopes are 2,315 meters (7,600 feet), it is ‘snow assured’. The resort where The Beatles filmed scenes for Help! from 1965, is open until May 1.

Book It: Seven nights at the Hotel Steiner from £1,654 pp full board on March 16, including flights and transfers to East Midlands-Salzburg (igluski.com).

PERFECT SPIRES IN THE ITALY ALPS

One foot was in Italy, the other in Switzerland. It was very high at 3,480 meters (11,417 feet) – and there was a lot of snow.

From this meeting point of countries at the Theodul Glacier you could see the ‘Toblerone’ peak of the Matterhorn towering over the Swiss resort of Zermatt to the north and Cervinia in Italy to the south.

This must be one of the most beautiful borders in Europe – not only because of the beautiful view of the Matterhorn. You also have a cozy wooden ‘refugio’, complete with a small restaurant/bar. A heavenly place to rest weary limbs.

The slopes remain open in Zermatt until April 21 (year-round skiing on the glacier) and in Cervinia until May 5. Both are perfect for late season getaways.

Zermatt is better known, with its boutique hotels and designer shops. Cervinia is a quieter Italian neighbor. It is Italy’s highest ski village at 2,050 meters (6,730 feet), hidden in the Valle d’Aosta.

It has cobbled streets with inviting restaurants and bars. Compared to glitzy Zermatt, this is a down-to-earth value in the Alps.

And the best of this moment? There is enough snow.

  • Seven nights at the VRetreats spa hotel in Cervinia, Italy from £1,689 pp half board on March 16 including flights and transfers (inghams.co.uk). More information: cervinia.it.
