Madonna talks about the severity of her health crisis that briefly landed her in an artificial coma last summer.

“It was strange to finally not feel like I was in control,” the Grammy winner said during her concert at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California, on Monday, March 4, per Variety. “I’ve fallen off a lot of horses and broken a lot of bones. I have a titanium hip. I mean, the list goes on, but nothing can stop me.”

Madonna’s life was turned upside down last summer when she developed a serious bacterial infection. The health problems led to the ‘Like a Prayer’ singer falling into a coma and remaining in intensive care for several days.

“This summer I had a surprise,” said 65-year-old Madonna during her last show. “It’s called a near-death experience. Yes, and I’m not kidding. It was pretty scary. Of course, I didn’t know for four days because I was in an induced coma. But when I woke up, the first word I said was ‘No.’ Anyway, that’s what my assistant tells me.”

She continued, “I’m pretty sure God said to me, ‘Will you come with us? Would you like to come with me? Do you want to go this way?’ And I said, ‘No. No.’ No!'”

During her concert, Madonna thanked the doctor Dr. David Agus – who was in the audience – for his care during her recovery.

“He has put up with so many entertaining calls from me,” she joked. “When I was sick this summer and literally couldn’t walk from my bed to the toilet, I called him every other day and asked why I had no energy. ‘When would my energy return? When would I feel like myself again? When could I go on tour again?’ When, when, when, when, when, when, when? And all he said was, ‘Go outside in the sun.’”

For Madonna, the sun is not her favorite source of vitamin D. But after Agus said it would help her kidneys keep working, she reluctantly followed the doctor’s orders.

“I hate the sun, but I did it anyway and it was so hard for me to walk from my house to the backyard and sit in the sun,” Madonna said. “I know that sounds crazy, but it was hard and I didn’t know when I could get back up and when I could be myself again and when I would have my energy back. It was strange to finally not feel like I was in control. And that was my lesson to let go.”
