The latter was part of the Benfica squad last season and hasn’t looked back since, making 57 appearances in all competitions.

Neves will now hope to add to his three international caps when Portugal take on Sweden and Slovenia over the next seven days.

But his club future has been the talk of the town following interest from some European elites.

And it is United who are believed to be leading the race as they look to rebuild their midfield.

Christian Eriksen and Casemiro are on the wrong side of 30, while Sofyan Amrabat will return to Fiorentina once his loan spell expires.

And United fans are now hoping Fernandes can convince Neves to join him at Old Trafford.

One said: “Officer Bruno, do something for us.”

Another stated: “If United rumors are true, he’s ready.”

Fernandes is confident that Neves can make the leap to the elite.

He said: “I don’t know if the United rumors are true, but I know he (Neves) is ready for that big jump.

“He is an excellent player, he plays for the national team. That is also why the big clubs are after him.”

Meanwhile, Fernandes believes the rules need to be changed after Amad Diallo was sent off following his FA Cup winner against Liverpool.

The ace took off his shirt as he celebrated the dramatic late goal, which led to a second yellow card and dismissal.

But Fernandes believes lawmakers should put an end to the bizarre punishment.

He said: “Amad got his reward for doing the right things. If you do the right things, you’ll get a chance, and what’s yours will come to you.

“He deserves it, unfortunately he was sent away, but it’s part of the moment and being young.

“You have to enjoy this moment and I think it is one of the rules that football has to change. Because you have to be able to celebrate the goal, of course with respect for other clubs, to enjoy your moment.”
