Man Utd still needs a midfielder and a striker, not a new stadium

It took four companies and several thousand pounds before the leak in the roof of my front bedroom was finally fixed.

Eventually I was pointed in the direction of Moggsy – who I previously only recognized from drinking bitters at the Royal Oak – as the answer to all my problems.

And he was, and it hasn't leaked since. But at no point did I feel that the house was not fit for purpose or that it was time to move to new construction.

You know, one that looks like the rest of the houses on the street and has a kitchen island.

“Oh a kitchen island, how happy we will be here.”

My house is over 100 years old and it is quirky: it has some doors that don't hang as they are intended and it can get very cold in winter.

I completely misjudged the size of the new sofa, so it no longer looks as 'open' as before.

But it is my home, where my two children grew up, and it holds many memories.

There was much the same feeling among Manchester United fans last week when it was announced that minority interest Sir Jim Ratcliffe (below) was planning to move them to a brand new stadium.

If you ask most United fans, 99 percent, if given the chance, would rather see the money spent on another striker and midfielder than another stadium. They don't want to leave Old Trafford.

It is still a beautiful, atmospheric football field full of passion and, above all, full of memories.

Where 'dad used to go', 'where grandpa used to stand', 'where mum went to her first match' – where people fell in love with football, fell in love with Manchester United and wanted to take their children to do the same thing.

There is understandably a fear that the club is in danger of becoming like every other club in the Premier League on the pitch.

If it moves to a new stadium, that could very well be the case.

A distant relative from Spain visited a year ago and guess what was at the top of his list?

He wanted to see Old Trafford and even though there was no match in progress he was rushed into fulfilling his wish.

My son's friend, Matzua from Mexico City, is a fan of Chivas – Javier Hernandez's old club from which he has just returned – and came to stay with us.

Guess what his dream was? You'd think he'd just found out he'd won the EuroMillions as we approached the back of the Stretford End to park.

My son took him to see the Munich Tunnel – and the various statues on the ground – before watching United win. He floated.

It was much the same when I went to Benfica's original Stadium of Light – not the new one that looks like the Emirates. Like when I went to Vicente Calderon of Atletico Madrid, not to their new ground that looks like both Benfica's and the Emirates' Stadium of Light.

Walking up from underground and out of the tunnel at Maracana in Rio de Janeiro in its original guise is something I won't forget.

Now, of course, nostalgia should never rank higher than safety, and as we unfortunately know, some stadiums were a death trap.

Some needed chairs to bring them in, modernize them or bulldoze them completely.

But Old Trafford? There is still a lot to do for Sir Jim, but building a new stadium or training ground should not be at the top of the list.

Trust me, there's nothing wrong with Carrington.

I'm sitting in a great spot in the press box at Old Trafford and – while there will be exceptions – friends elsewhere in the field say it's fine but needs some TLC here and there.

Yes, there's a leaky roof, but I can put United in touch with Moggsy.
