Today McDonald’s UK and Ireland announced it will undergo its biggest menu change in decades as the chain celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Amid the major shake-up, the restaurant will be making recipe changes to its beloved beef burgers, promising they will be ‘better than ever before’.

Fan favorites that will see changes include the Big Mac, Quarter Pounder with Cheese, and of course the classic Cheeseburger variations, including the double and triple.

McDonald’s describes the changes as “minor tweaks” to the way it cooks and prepares its beef burgers, improving “all the elements customers enjoy most.”

From placing onions on each patty as they cook on the grill for extra flavor, to changing the sear on the beef patties – the chain insists the recipe change will produce the “tastiest burgers yet.”

Today McDonald’s UK and Ireland announced it will undergo its biggest menu change in decades as the chain celebrates its 50th anniversary this year

The changes, which come into effect later this month, have already been implemented in both the Australian and US markets, and their success prompted the fast food giant to bring them to Britain and Ireland.

How McDonald’s is changing the way its burgers are made

Citizens: A tighter sear on the grill, resulting in hotter and juicier beef patties for maximum flavor

Grilled Onions – New processes include adding white onions to the grill on top of the patties as they cook, for extra color and better charred flavor

Lettuce – Fresh lettuce straight from the fridge for extra crunch

Melting Cheese – Hotter beef patties guarantee that the cheese will seep over the sides, creating an even smoother texture

New Buns – A new buttery brioche-style recipe promises a ‘soft and pillowy’ textured bun

Foodies can get their hands on the updated classic beef burgers when they hit stores from mid-March.

Fans have been promised that the burgers will be even juicier, and that they will be served hotter. The new processes ensure that the beef has greater quality and taste.

The commotion comes fifty years after the first golden arches appeared in a British shopping street in 1974.

The Woolwich restaurant was the first McDonald’s in Britain and offered customers ‘The United Tastes of America’.

Gareth Pearson, Chief Restaurant Officer at McDonald’s UK and Ireland, said: ‘As we celebrate McDonald’s 50th anniversary in the UK, we are delighted to introduce our enhanced classic beef burgers.

‘We are constantly innovating and improving our menu and we found that a collection of additional small improvements to the iconic burgers make a significant difference to the taste.

“Another big part of this transition relates to our restaurant teams and how we can support them in delivering the best possible customer experience.

“Not only have we introduced new kitchen technology, but we’ve also retrained all 177,000 crew members in these new procedures so they can serve our best burgers yet.”

And switching recipes isn’t the only big change; the news comes just after McDonald’s launched a new personalized ‘inclusive’ uniform that allows staff to wear the clothes ‘they feel most comfortable in’.

The fast food giant has announced a uniform trial where employees can wear beanies, bucket hats and bandanas, as well as jeans, chinos, denim skirts and even joggers.

Employees can “create a personalized uniform that best reflects their own identity” and have the choice between classic and tailored fits to ensure “all preferences are met,” McDonald’s said.

This will be the time that the fast food chain makes changes to its uniform since 2016.

McDonald’s says the new range has been designed in response to employee feedback to ensure it is ‘modern, inclusive and functional’.

It follows that other major companies have changed their uniforms to be more inclusive. In 2022, Virgin Atlantic announced that crew, pilots and ground crew could wear the uniform they felt most comfortable in, ‘regardless of gender’.

Meanwhile, British Airways relaxed the rules around its strict uniform policy last year and also became gender neutral.
