Meg Bellamy has revealed her neighbor convinced her to audition for The Crown and insists she still doesn’t think she looks like Kate Middleton.

The 20-year-old actress will play the Princess of Wales in the final season of the hit Netflix show, which debuts on the streaming platform on November 16.

Speak with The Telegraphthe star, who grew up in Berkshire, explained how she wasn’t signed to an agent when Netflix put out a call for young actresses on social media in April 2022.

At the time, Meg was working as a red brick at Legoland Windsor – which she described as ‘the best job ever’.

She said: “I got the opportunity in April last year [for The Crown] popped up on my Twitter and at the same time my neighbor sent it to me and told me to go for it.”

Although Meg’s neighbor was convinced she looked exactly like the Princess of Wales, the actress said she had never been compared to Kate before.

She added: “I never understood that and I still think maybe it doesn’t, but with the amazing hair and make-up teams and the costume department, once it’s all put together you have to have an essence to have.’

Meg opened up about the audition process, revealing that she had to tell the producers her height to begin with.

In addition, the star said the casting team also asked her to reveal a fun fact about herself – with Meg choosing to tell them about her job at the popular theme park.

During the process, Meg said she tried to “unleash her inner makeup artist” and carefully studied Kate’s Netflix photo to figure out how the future princess applied her bronzer.

She continued, “At every audition I just looked and looked [Kate]. Reading about her and listening to her was so important, both before and during the period.’

Although the costume department had photos of the Princess of Wales to base Meg’s wardrobe on, the actress stressed that there are no videos of the royal speaking as a student – meaning some of her mannerisms were left up to Meg’s interpretation.

Additionally, the star also reflected on the ‘intense’ filming stint at St Andrews in Scotland earlier this year.

Meg and her co-star Ed McVey (who has been cast as Prince William) were photographed filming scenes on the historic campus, which dates back to the 15th century.

“It’s a small place,” Meg said. ‘And we were the talk of the town.’

One viral clip, uploaded to TikTok by current students, shows Meg holding hands with model and actor Oli Green, who appears to have been cast as one of Kate’s former flames.

The star was also seen filming scenes as a waitress at an Italian restaurant and jogging around the area.

While Meg didn’t reveal whether she had watched the series in its entirety, the star did praise the first season of The Crown, labeling Claire Foy and Matt Smith as “absolutely brilliant.”

Before she was cast in the show, Meg said she had “no strong feelings” about the royal family – but recalled being “in awe” of Kate Middleton while watching her wedding to Prince William in 2011.

Although Meg has no official acting credits to her name, Ed has considerably more experience; he graduated from the Drama Center London in 2021 and was an understudy in the play Camp Siegfried, which was shown at the Old Vic in London.

Meg has never acted professionally and applied for the role after achieving an A* in drama in her A-levels at St Crispin’s School in Wokingham, Berkshire.

The final part of the royal drama will air in two parts, with the first half of the series arriving on Netflix on November 16 and the second on December 14.

And according to the photos released by the streaming giant, fans will see a number of historic moments recreated on screen, including Princess Diana’s final days before she died in a car crash in Paris in August 1997.
