He left because his niece, the bride, skipped the wedding reception and got wrecked in a limousine.

Her uncle was furious and ran away with his gift.

Seeing that she was wrong, she finally sent an 'apology text', but he was stunned by her cheek.

He has received a lot of criticism from his niece for his actions, but questions whether it was unreasonable to leave her wedding reception early and accept his gift.

He sought the wisdom of the Reddit community to give him advice.

There was a huge response to his post, with more than 15,000 commenting and another 2,500 commenting.

The overriding feeling concluded that he wasn't an asshole and that his niece needed to take a long, hard look at herself.

In his afterhe explained the whole sad marriage drama.

“My 22-year-old niece got married last weekend. The family is exploding with drama right now because of what I (and my wife) did,” he explained.

“The wedding service ended around 4.30pm and everyone was asked to go to the reception.

“The wedding party had a limousine to transport them and a separate limousine took the parents, grandparents and siblings,” he said.

He and his wife arrived at the location twenty minutes later. By 5 p.m. most of the 150 guests had also arrived.

But at the venue there was no sign of the bride and groom and the guests had no idea where they were.

He said: “The wedding coordinator was being bullied because it was now 5.45pm and there was no wedding party. We were all just standing around looking without food or drink.”

But it soon became clear where the newly engaged couple was, and they were in no hurry to get to their reception.

He continued, “Apparently they told the limo driver to stop at a liquor store and then drive around on the highway for an hour so the wedding party could get confused.

“Around 6pm, MOH said they would arrive within 20 minutes.”

At this point the uncle said enough was enough.

“My wife and I looked at each other and said we were out. We thought it was terribly disrespectful that they were doing this to all their guests,” he said.

“I told my brother (FoB) that we were leaving and taking the gift with us.

“He tried to plead by saying, 'They're just kids, let them have fun.' But I wasn't having any of it.”

After a few days, things calmed down. But a text from his niece reignited them.

“I received an apology text from her, followed by a request for the gift again,” he wrote.

Her response shocked him: “I said I felt very disrespected and that I didn't want to give her any more gifts. She snapped and called me an asshole.”

Redditors were left speechless, but they were behind him the entire time.

One of them said, “I don't blame you for accepting the gift. What they did was incredibly selfish and disrespectful.

“I think the fact that she immediately retracted her apology and cursed you when you didn't give her the gift speaks volumes about her character.”

You're not an asshole, another commenter said: “Wedding guests are GUESTS and shouldn't be treated so poorly by the wedding organizers.”

This person said he was right to stick to his guns: “People need to learn that there are consequences for their actions. They did their thing without worrying about the people waiting for them.

“You showed them the consequences. Of course she 'apologized' for wanting your gift. Has she apologized to any of the other 148 guests she made fun of?'

This person had no patience for them: “They were gaming in the limo and didn't give a fuck about their guests. It was incredibly rude of them.”

And this person summed up the opinion of many more people: “They preferred to be wasted over the comfort of their guests.”
