The two still images captured Casemiro and VVD in similar “offside” positions before the deadball was delivered.

And excited fans flooded social media with their assessment of Gibbs-White’s Instagram post.

Casemiro’s goal was allowed due to teammate It was determined that Raphael Varane did NOT block a relevant Forest player.

In contrast, Van Dijk’s effort was cleared when his Liverpool colleague Wataru Endo was judged to have impeded Chelsea defender Levi Colwill.

But many Forest fans claimed it was “blatant inconsistency”.

And even this measured explanation online couldn’t stop a stream of criticism: “Blocking is only an offside attack if it stops a player who could challenge. Varane doesn’t block a player who could get involved.”

Some viewers believe Forest were wrongly denied at least extra time as United sneaked through to a home quarter-final draw with Liverpool.

One fan said of the two goals: “One difference… one is against United. I would never get it.”

Another wrote: “@FA_PGMOL…more inconsistent performance for your fate.”

And a fourth summed up the views of those saddened that Casemiro’s decisive header was awarded.

He argued, “How can you prepare when there is such a glaring inconsistency?”

But other observers backed referee Chris Kavanagh for allowing the goal, which led to a six-minute delay prior to stoppage time, mainly for VAR.

One of those viewers wrote: “United blocked a player who was nowhere near Casimero.”

Another simply claimed: “One affected the game, the other didn’t.”

And a few fans wondered if Gibbs-White could get in trouble for his Instagram intervention – even though he didn’t write any words and let the photo speak for itself.

“Can he be punished for this?” one supporter asked.

There was also a group of Forest fans who were more angry about the whining of one of their heroes than about whether the goal was legitimate.

One said: “Frustrated too, but I don’t like our best players complaining on social media after a tough loss.”

A second agreed: “Instead of crying every time a decision goes against us, why don’t we take responsibility and defend set pieces better.”

In terms of the bigger picture, Liverpool and Van Dijk were fortunately able to put the offside debate behind them, unlike Forest with them.

That’s because, as Nuno Espirito Santo’s men crashed out of the FA Cup, VVD himself emerged with the only goal of the weekend’s Wembley showpiece against Chelsea… in the 118th minute.
