PHIL FODEN's hat-trick set an astonishing record for Premier League goals in a single week.
Foden's third goal in Manchester City's 3-1 comeback win over Brentford made it 45 top-flight goals after a spectacular weekend.
That total surpassed the 44 achieved during a 10-game week in both September 2020 and May 2023.
It also means that the Prem is on course for a new season record for goals.
The total of 730 goals in 228 matches this season equates to an average of 3.2 per match.
If that percentage is maintained, the Prem would reach 1,216 at the end of the campaign, surpassing the current highest figure of 1,084 for a 38-match season.
But despite providing an assist, record-breaking goalscorer Erling Haaland failed to score on his return from injury as City dictated against the Bees on Monday night.
Neal Maupay hit a breakaway opener for Brentford but Foden responded with three devastating finishes, including a diving header.
The England playmaker told Sky Sports afterwards: βThe only thing I have set for myself is to try to improve on my last season.
“I'm trying to get better stats, more assists and goals.

“I have done well this season, but I have to continue to show this level.”
City pipped Arsenal into second place – just two points behind Liverpool and with a game in hand.
And the win for Pep Guardiola's men ensured a Prem bonanza in front of goal in recent days.
The top spot went to Newcastle's 4-4 home draw against the renewed Luton on Saturday.
The next best (or worst, depending on who you support) was Wolves' 4-2 win at Chelsea.
