Runaway wildfires ravaged the coastal hills of central Chile, killing dozens of people and leaving hundreds missing. Thousands of homes were destroyed, especially in the hilly neighborhoods around the seaside resort of Viña del Mar, where many elderly residents were unable to escape. The fires exploded Friday amid unusually warm weather and high winds.

“We are facing a tragedy of enormous proportions,” President Gabriel Boric said on Sunday as survivors tried to make sense of their losses. He announced that the nation would celebrate two days of mourning.
