Queen Mary last night performed her first solo engagement since securing the throne as she watched Denmark capture a silver medal at the European Handball Championship.

The royal, 51, traveled to Cologne, Germany, to support the men's team on the final day of the 18-day tournament.

The mother-of-four – who became queen after her mother-in-law's abdication earlier this month – opted for a smart fitted blazer for her occasion.

The monarch paired her burgundy blazer with a white silk shirt and smart black trousers.

Mary kept her jewelry minimal and opted for a pair of dangling diamond earrings and a dainty pendant necklace.

The Danish queen styled her long brown hair in loose waves and opted for natural makeup for the outing, consisting of a radiant base and pale pink lipstick.

The royal – who is said to be 'completely devoted to working out' – completed her ensemble with burgundy glasses, which matched her blazer perfectly.

Denmark – who were reigning world champions – lost the title to France last night after losing 33-31 in extra time.

During the game, the Queen happily posed for a photo – which was uploaded to Instagram – from the royal box.

The caption read: 'It was a very exciting match. The photo below was taken just before the second half started.

'What a final… Well fought Denmark. It was close and nerve-wracking to watch. It was an impressive effort from all of you at the European Championship.

'Congratulations on the silver medal I was awarded.'

The caption was then signed 'Her Majesty The Queen'.

Queen Mary was pictured happily waving to the crowd during the match before heading to the pitch to congratulate the players.

Handball was invested in 1897 by the Danish teachers RN Ernst and Holger Nielsen.

The sport was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1972 and the women's team has since won more gold medals than any other country.

Earlier this month, Queen Mary's husband, King Frederick, published a new book outlining his plans for his reign – which included some very personal insights into his marriage.

The book – which is already a bestseller in Denmark – delves into Frederik's childhood and his complicated relationship with his late father Prince Henrik, who died in 2018.

In addition, the monarch also provides insight into his marriage to Queen Mary and their 'stable life' together.

In one fragment, Frederik reveals that his wife of twenty years speaks to him about what he learned from his 'patriarchal' father during his youth.

In outlining his happy marriage, Frederik plays down the recent affair rumors that circulated after photos emerged of him enjoying a night out with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova during a night out in Madrid.

Author Jens Andersen confirmed to local media that he worked on the book with King Frederik for eighteen months.

The final draft was then sent to publishers on New Year's Eve, the day Queen Margrethe announced her plans to abdicate after 52 years.
