Race Across the World viewers were outraged last night when they called the series finale a “fix.”

The popular BBC show followed five British couples as they traveled from one checkpoint in Canada to the next without any technology – and competed for a £20,000 grand prize.

Despite a rocky start in the final episode, Cathie Rowe, 49, and Tricia Sail, 48, managed to make it to the remote lighthouse at Spear Point in St John’s ahead of all the other contestants.

After hitchhiking to Bishop’s Falls on the outskirts of Newfoundland, the duo – who have been friends since childhood – struggled to find someone to take them to the remote area of St John’s.

On the penultimate day of the game, Cathie and Tricia spent hours approaching drivers at a gas station.

A Canadian resident took pity on the couple, saying he and his wife would be happy to accommodate them for the night, but could not get them to their final destination.

Hours later, however, the friendly stranger offered to drive them to a spot not far from the lighthouse the next morning, prompting irate viewers to speculate whether producers had intervened.

Posting to Twitter, someone wrote: ‘Another last minute windfall…’

Another said, ‘Oh, how convenient. Sorry, but this show is so solid it’s obvious now.’

“Wow, these producers are convincing,” wrote a third. “Get them a room now!”

At the start of the episode, Manchester couple Zainib and Mobeen lost their 14-hour lead over the other contestants.

The pair were ‘released’ at the final checkpoint in the evening – meaning they had to spend precious time looking for a place to sleep rather than expending all their energy trying to reach St John’s.

This decision also sparked outrage from viewers – some claimed it put Zainib and Mobeen at a disadvantage.

Outraged viewers took to Twitter to label the show a “fix,” speculating whether “convincing producers” were responsible for Cathie and Tricia’s sudden change in happiness.

“So annoying how many times the head is lost because they have to leave at night,” a fourth viewer tweeted.

Meanwhile, a fifth furious: “I’m confused. How did [Cathie and Tricia] lead with Zainib and Mobeen 14 hours ahead???’

After welcoming Cathie and Tricia to their home, the Canadian couple said they would do their utmost to help them reach St John’s, which was 400 km away.

After eating dinner with the couple, Cathie told their hosts, “Okay, cards on the table – we need a lift to St John’s tomorrow.” As early as possible.’

“That’s okay,” the man’s partner said. “Yes, we’ll take you there.”

The couple said they would check with nearby friends and family to see if anyone was headed that way, but insisted they bring Cathie and Tricia themselves if needed.

The couple was absolutely stunned by the kind offer. “Honestly,” Cathie said. ‘That is amazing.’

As such, some viewers said the show “restored their faith in humanity.”

“A huge shout out to all Canadians for the generosity and kindness shown to all participants,” one tweeted.

“Think it’s been proven that Canadians must be the most kind and considerate nation on the planet,” added another.

Talking to the BBC before the final episode aired, Tricia said, “It will confirm that you can do this adventure with friends – you don’t have to be related or in a relationship, it will confirm that it has been worth it, it would also be a great vacation for me and my husband, Matt.”
