Tensions were high Ryan Reynolds And Rob McElhenney as Wrexham AFC went into their final National League match during the Welcome to Wrexham Season 2 final, which aired on Tuesday 14 November.
At the time, fans were unaware that this would be Wrexham’s last game in that particular competition, but Reynolds, 47, and McElhenney, 46, were hopeful the game against Boreham Wood would end in victory – and promotion to English football. Competition.
“It’s definitely two full years bubbling to the top,” Reynolds said of the team’s possible promotion. “I would say this happens all the time, though. Just when I think it can’t bubble anymore, like the Nott’s [County] game – here I am, having really had four full sleepless nights in the run-up to Boreham Wood. It’s all I think about.”
One of Reynolds and McElhenney’s goals when they became co-owners of Wrexham AFC was to turn the franchise into a semi-professional team. To do this, Wrexham had to win enough games and score enough points to gain promotion from the National League to the English Football League.
“It has to end today,” McElhenney said ahead of the Wrexham v Boreham Wood match last April. “This has been going on for so long.”
Wrexham scored three goals to beat Boreham Wood who had scored just one. Along with the 3–1 win, Wrexham were officially promoted to the EFL.
“Rob and I kind of blacked out at this point, but somehow we’ll never forget it,” Reynolds wrote in an Instagram post after the April 22 win. As Wrexham fans stormed the pitch, Reynolds and McElhenney hugged to celebrate the win.
At the end of Tuesday’s final, fans watched as Reynolds and McElhenney celebrated in the Wrexham Championship Parade. While only 15,000 fans were expected to attend the event, 40,000 were there to show their support.
FX announced this earlier on Tuesday Welcome to Wrexham would return to the network for an upcoming third season, premiering in spring 2024.
