SAINSBURY’S CEO has apologized for an IT crisis that left thousands of consumers unable to buy food.

The supermarket canceled online orders on Saturday and was unable to accept contactless payments.

Customers had to pay in cash or with chip and PIN, causing huge queues at the cash registers.

Many ATMs in the area also ran out.

A software update caused the problem.

Yesterday, CEO Simon Roberts said in an email: “I would like to apologize to you and to any customer affected by the issue.

“I’m sorry if you didn’t receive the usual service from Sainsbury’s this weekend.”

Those with canceled deliveries will receive a voucher.

Tesco was also hit by technical problems on Saturday and had to stop thousands of deliveries.
