The protests in the Sandeshkhali area of West Bengal are part of a long-standing pattern of unrest in the region. The allegations of land grabbing and sexual assault by the villagers against Trinamool Congress leaders Sheikh Shahjahan, Shibaprasad Hazra and Uttam Sardar. While Hazra and Sardar have been arrested, Shahjahan remains on the run since a gang attack on a team of ED officials who had arrived to raid his house in early January. But first and foremost, it is the Mamata Banerjee government’s response to the protests over police inaction on the villagers’ complaints that should worry us all.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has shown no empathy and urgency in dealing with the allegations and accused the BJP of seeking political gain from the situation.

The BJP, on the other hand, is making it an issue between Hindus and Muslims and is more interested in cornering the TMC.

Arrests have been made and CM Banerjee has promised to take action, but by engaging in political blame games she has also undermined the seriousness of the situation.

It is very disheartening to see the TMC, a political party that often portrays itself as progressive, liberal and in favor of women empowerment, downplaying allegations.
The tragic case of a minor who was allegedly raped while attending a birthday party highlights this disturbing trend.

How long will Sandeshkhali burn and how much longer will the women wait for justice?
