The frugal tip that will help you save money in every Aldi store

THE cost of a basic grocery store has skyrocketed recently, so savvy shoppers have come up with a host of neat tricks to get the price down as much as possible.

But when a customer came across a money-saving hack, she thought it sounded too good to be true, so she tested it herself.

Chelseawho posts on social media as @thriftytipsandtripsmum, filmed herself trying out the hack in her local Aldi.

The mother explained that she had read that the supermarket is offering discounts on food items with a best before date of five days or less, which is perfect if you are shopping on a budget.

Chelsea explained: “If you're a seasoned Aldi shopper you'll know their prices are pretty damn good! But what you may not know is their awesome expiration date policy!!!

“If you pick up an item that expires within five days of purchase, you will get that item at a discounted price AND this includes items that are not yet discounted!

“You will of course get the best discounts on items with an expiration date of the same day and the day after.”

To put the hack to the test, Chelsea grabbed a pack of chicken breast fillets from the shelf, which expired the next day but was not yet discounted.

At the checkout, the mother then asked for a discount and they got a whopping 30 percent discount – not too shabby at all.

The mother went on to say that the hack would be good for certain food items such as cheese, bread and meat.

You could stock up on the discounted items and freeze them, she suggested, so you don't have to use them as quickly and still get the best bargains.

However, the mother noted that she only tried it in her local Aldi and that different Aldi stores may not apply the same discount.

You can of course wait until the items are eventually marked with yellow stickers, but this hack means you get the items you want before anyone else does.

Not only that, but if you're looking for ingredients that you can use the same day, it might be worth having a root to still find the closest expiration date.

Other savvy shoppers loved the trick and couldn't wait to try it out.

One said: “Wow. Great tip. I didn't know this. I'll try it, I'm buying loads of these.”

However, one person said: “I work at Aldi and it's only the same day and next one day 30% discount.

“Date checking is usually done late afternoon/early evening and next day stock is reduced to 30% and the current date is further reduced or withdrawn from sale.”

But someone else shared a trick for food delivery, they noted: “If you deliver online, the fresh item will have a number on it with a plus sign indicating how many days they expect it to last.

“If it is delivered and has a due date lower than the expected number you will get a full refund, that's from Asda and Tesco, the others not sure.”

The Sun has asked Aldi for comment.
