A mother discovered the hard way to avoid getting seeds in the washing machine after her child got tangled in it.
After completing a load, she warned others not to make the same mistake she did.
Hanna (@hannahkaayy) shared her laundry mistake and subsequent advice in a TikTok video.
She explained that she let her child play with a mixture of chia seeds and water, but didn't expect what would happen next.
“Did you know that if you let your child play with chia seeds and then wash the clothes, this will happen?” she asked.
Seeds were all over her baby's clothes and after doing laundry, she took out the laundry, revealing sprouts all over the clothes.
“Chia seeds can germinate in your washing machine if they are not removed from the fabric,” she said, showing her contaminated pile of towels.
“How come none of the mom blogs warned me about this?”
Hannah joked that her devices became a breeding ground for plants without her knowledge.
“Your washing machine becomes a chia pet,” she said.
Fortunately, she had a solution that made the sprouts disappear with a second rinse.
“Don't worry, bleach will kill them, but you will have to pick every seed off your clothes,” she said.
Mothers around the world thanked her for her public service announcement that many were unaware of.
“I'm definitely getting this idea from my Pinterest, thanks for the heads up,” said one.
Many realized for the first time that chia seeds and chia pets were the same.
“I don't understand why it took me until this moment to realize that chia pet seeds are the same chia seeds that humans eat,” said one commenter.
Others said they, too, learned the hard way that seeds in the wrong places can spell disaster.
“I put them down the drain once and a week later I pulled out yards of sprouts,” said one commenter.
