The four-foot-long bull shark clamped its jaws on the 34-year-old fishermen's leg.

His brother Umesh said: “My brother was going swimming every night.

“We ran to the spot and saw my brother bleeding in the river.

He added: “I took off my shirt and grabbed another shirt that my brother had kept aside and wrapped the wound with it to stop the blood loss and rushed him to the hospital.”

Authorities have seized the dead shark for further investigation.

Police spokesperson Satish Shivarkar said, “He was bitten by a four-foot shark on February 13 at 6.30 pm.

“He belongs to a tribal community and lives with his family in Manor Dongar Village in Palghar district.

“His left leg was bitten off by a wound almost 10 cm deep.

“We have learned that his injured leg will have to be amputated below the knee.”

After the victim was admitted to Shri Vinoba Bhave Civil Hospital in Silvassa, a spokesperson confirmed that Govari's leg will have to be amputated.

His doctor said: “He is out of danger now. His left leg, which was injured in the shark attack, will have to be amputated.

“We'll get to work on Thursday.”

The victim lives with his parents, wife, two children and siblings.

Marine researcher Bhushan Bhoir said it was the “first recorded shark attack in the United States.” history of local fishing.”
