Houston police responded Sunday afternoon to reports of a shooting at a Houston Christian megachurch led by televangelist and pastor Joel Osteen. said on social media.

Details were unclear, but at least one person, a child, appeared to have been shot: Harris County Officer Alan Rosen. said on X.

The shooter is believed to be shot by law enforcement, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said on social media. “We continue to assist in a methodical/thorough search of the complex,” Sheriff Gonzalez said.

The church goes down just before 3 p.m the largest municipalities in the United States and attended by thousands of people every Sunday, described the episode as “an active situation where shots were fired.”

Mr. Osteen, whose weekly television services reach millions of viewers, could not immediately be reached Sunday.

An eyewitness told the television station I LOVE that she was in the church when she heard several shots go off and saw a man who appeared to be in his 20s or 30s holding a gun. She said she came across a smaller room where she took shelter with about 10 other people, including a child.

“We were grateful,” the woman told KHOU. “It could be worse.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said a statement Sunday that he had offered state resources to assist the community and “help bring swift justice to the criminal who committed this heinous act.”
