Shop in Orkney accidentally orders more Easter eggs than the population of the entire island and now raffles them off

A remote shop in the Orkney Islands made a major blunder when they accidentally ordered more Easter eggs than the population of the entire island.

Dan Dafydd, owner of Sinclair General Stores on Sanday Island, accidentally ordered 720 Easter eggs – more than the population of 500 people.

He intended to buy 80 individual chocolate eggs, but made an embarrassing mistake when he accidentally bought 80 boxes instead.

The shop owner is now raffling 100 eggs to one lucky winner in aid of the RNLI after their Easter egg stock became too large to handle.

Dan said, ‘It’s mental how it started! I imagine everyone is having a good giggle, and that’s good!’

Dan explained how to place a pre-order for Easter eggs six months before the annual holiday.

He said: ‘I wanted to order 80 Easter eggs – the deals weren’t great so I wanted to get the bare minimum, and we could always add more as the time got closer.

‘I didn’t think anything about it until the van arrived two weeks ago with a truckload of Easter eggs.

‘You can imagine my surprise, shock and embarrassment when I realized I had messed up and ordered 80 boxes – not 80 unique Easter eggs!’

Dan said they decided to turn the human error into a fundraising initiative for RNLI – a charity close to the hearts of many in the community.

He added: ‘We are a small island surrounded by sea, many people have died here from boating related incidents, but the RNLI serves the community and we have a colleague who also works closely with them.

“So it just made sense to use RNLI – and it coincided nicely as they are also celebrating their 200th anniversary.”

The RNLI said it was grateful for the fundraising.

The lifeboat charity said in a statement: ‘We are extremely grateful to Dan from Sinclair General Stores in Sanday for this incredibly generous gesture following a rather unfortunate delivery of 720 chocolate eggs.’

They added on Twitter: ‘Have they overdone it, or are the people of Orkney in for something this Easter?!

‘With 720 Easter eggs for 500 islanders, shop owner Dan Dafydd is trying to make room! But they’re turning misfortune into kindness by raffling 100 eggs for the RNLI. Thank you!’

The Orkney Islands are located off the northeastern coast of Scotland. Sanday is the third largest island and can be reached by ferry or plane.

It is known for its beautiful white sandy beaches and impressive sand dunes, and has been served by Sinclair General Stores since opening in 2016.
