The Peacocks store, located in the central square of Ashford’s County Square Shopping Center in Kent, has only just reopened after “essential electrical work” forced it to remain closed for more than a week.

But employees are now scaling back their operations with the top floor of the store closed and the shelves looking bare. KentOnline reports.

Peacocks, which once had 420 stores in the UK, has already closed more than 200 branches.

Shoppers expressed their disappointment over the latest loss in posts shared on social media.

One person wrote on Facebook: “Soon there will be nothing left in the city centres.”

Another said: “I hope they finally change the name of the mall…Ghost Square!”

Someone else commented: “Wow, so Ashford loses (sic) another clothing store. We have nothing left. Soon our town will have vape shops and hairdressers coming to the good old ghost town of Ashford.”

Photos showed the closing sale is now in full swing.

Large red signs on clothing racks read: ‘SALE’.

Last month it was revealed that Peacocks is pulling down the shutters of its store in Camborne, Cornwall, on April 3 – with “a very heavy heart”.

And Peacocks closed its branch in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, on January 25.

One shopper said the move had left ‘another hole in the high street’, while a second simply responded: ‘tut tut’.

A Peacocks in Boscombe, Bournemouth also closes on April 6.

Peacocks fell into administration in November 2020 and closed half of its then 420 stores, dealing a major blow to the high street.

The fashion retailer went bankrupt after struggling to do business during the Covid-19 pandemic and multiple lockdowns, but has slowly rebuilt its portfolio to around 350 stores.

In October it revealed it had plans to open seven new stores in Wales, England and Scotland.

Peacocks has not confirmed the exact opening dates for the new stores.
