Asda will open 110 convenience stores this month as part of expansion plans

The retailer plans to convert all 470 convenience stores acquired from the Co-op and EG Group into Express stores by the end of March.

The EG Group is a global convenience store and fuel station retailer owned by the Issa brothers, who bought Asda from Walmart in 2020.

Asda bought 132 fuel stations and convenience stores from Co-op and EG for £438 million in August 2022.

The acquisition was approved in June 2023.

By the end of January, the supermarket had converted 259 locations.

Asda Express stores are smaller, local stores, rather than large superstores that are often located out of town.

They offer a wide range of products, both branded and private label products.

The retailer said stores will cater to a variety of customer needs, such as quickly shopping for items like bread and milk, grabbing lunch on the go, or preparing dinner from scratch.

Several new stores will open in February, located in different parts of the UK, from the Isle of Skye in the Hebrides to Plymouth in Devon and Ipswich in Suffolk.

Branches in Maidenhead and London are already active.

Andy Perry, Asda’s vice president of convenience, said: “February is a transformational month for the program with a record number of store openings and the conversion of all former Co-op locations to Asda Express locations.

“The teams have worked hard to get to this point and we look forward to bringing Asda's quality and low prices to many more communities across the UK.”

Shoppers can buy a range of hot and cold takeaway meals from Asda and partner brands including Leon at the new Express stores.

They also offer package pickup, returns, and grocery delivery through Uber Eats.

With so many retailers leaving the cities and high streets, it gives a much-needed boost to shoppers when new stores open.

Another supermarket has made plans to enter the convenience sector.

Morrisons is in the process of closing hundreds of McColl's stores and reopening them as mini Morrisons Daily sites.

These convenience stores will stock a range of Morrisons own brand and branded products, including fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, bread and dairy products.

The retailer has started stocking items from its budget Savers range in its 500 convenience stores, including toilet rolls, washing up liquid, sausages and skimmed milk.

In addition, Nisa will open 400 new stores as part of its massive expansion plans.
