The NRL is expected to launch an investigation on Friday evening following an ugly brawl between Roosters and Rabbitohs supporters at Allianz Stadium.

Trent Robinson’s men defeated their fierce rivals 48-6 – with tensions reaching boiling point with rival supporters at Sydney’s Moore Park.

With the Roosters comfortably in front late in the second half, a fight started in the members’ area of the revamped sports facility moments after South Sydney fullback Latrell Mitchell was sin-binned.

Footage of the incident shows several people involved in the brawl exchanging a barrage of punches – in full view of many terrified children.

Security initially struggled to intervene, before many of those involved eventually walked away.

One man wears one Rabbitoh’s sweater was seen with a bloody mouth.

It is expected that CCTV will be used in an attempt to identify those involved, with a ban on NRL matches and possible court dates.

On the field, the Rabbitohs slumped to their third successive defeat, with coach Jason Demetriou now facing an uncertain future under pressure.

“It’s disappointing, it hurts, it’s probably the lowest point of my career right now, but I know how we’ll get out of it. We will fight and fight together,” he said at the post-match press conference.

“I have a lot of confidence in this group and I know they will come out.

‘The only way to relax [the noise] is to get laser focused and get our season going again.

“It’s just a matter of just getting that first win. We need to be more resilient.”

Demetriou’s decision to drop halfback Lachlan Ilias earlier this week raised many eyebrows, as did benching hooker Damien Cook.

Star recruit Jack Wton was also seen holding a knee late in the game in what was a night to forget for the Bunnies.

Primark is making waves in the swimwear world with the introduction of its new affordable range of period swimwear, but fans are embroiled in a heated debate over the practicality of the game-changing products.

Designed to provide comfort and convenience, Primark’s new collection features one-piece swim trunks and swimsuits, offering a practical solution for managing menstruation while enjoying water activities.

Even better, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get your hands on the range – which fans have compared to Modibodi’s premium period clothing – as prices start from £6 for swimwear briefs and £16.99 for a swimsuit.

On its website, Primark, while advertising the new one-piece swimsuit, says: ‘Feel extra safe during your cycle with this specially designed menstrual swimsuit!’

The inner layer of each garment in the range is made from polyester and elastane and is designed to fight odors and bacteria, followed by an absorbent layer to trap liquid, a waterproof layer to prevent leaks and a super soft outer layer for comfort .

For effective reuse, the fashion retailer advises customers to immediately rinse with cold water after wearing until the water runs clear, before adding it to laundry without fabric softener.

However, the launch has become the source of a debate among fans, who argue the pros and cons of wearing the swimwear in the water or on the beach.

One happy shopper, Lucy Bennett, took to Facebook on March 19 to share her excitement about the ‘groundbreaking’ garment she had purchased.

Uploading a photo of the Period swimwear bottoms to the Primark Haul group – which has over 186,000 members – Bennett wrote: “Another gamechanger from Primark, especially for teenage girls!”

Other fans agreed, with one writing: ‘Brilliant initiative Primark are so good at this kind of thing.’

Another contributor commented: ‘They’re super comfy too,’ while a third said: ‘I used these so well last year, definitely a game changer.’

However, not all reactions to the new range were positive. Some skeptical individuals expressed concerns about hygiene and cleanliness and questioned the suitability of historic swimwear for use in public settings.

One wrote: ‘This seems unsanitary, I don’t know,’ while another said: ‘I still wouldn’t risk it.’

An unconvinced third contributor commented: ‘I hope to God no one wears these while swimming in a pool. The blood will literally wash away in the water. These are only suitable for dry use, i.e. while sunbathing.’

One Primark fan, who remained neutral when discussing the merits of the garments, said: ‘I don’t think it’s really for swimming. More to wear on the beach to just spot. That’s what people use the Modibodi brand for.’

Despite the mixed reactions, Primark remains committed to providing its customers with accessible and inclusive options so everyone can feel comfortable and confident.

The launch of Period Swimming comes as Rita Ora stuns as she models her ‘fun and fun’ new spring collection at Primark.

The 33-year-old singer looked stunning in a stunning shoot to accompany the big release, with beautiful ensembles perfecting the sunny mood.

Republicans in Congress continue to sprint for the exit.

Rep. Mike Gallagher, Republican of Wisconsin, announced Friday afternoon that he would resign from Congress months earlier than expected on April 19, bringing the already minuscule Republican majority to one vote.

After his departure next month, Republicans will hold 217 seats in the House of Representatives compared to Democrats’ 213, meaning the Republican Party can afford only a single deviation from the party line when it comes to voting when all members are present .

Mr. Gallagher, the four-term lawmaker who chairs the Special Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, gave no reason for his early departure in the brief statement announcing his plans. He simply said that “after discussions with my family, I have made the decision to resign from my position,” and that he has “worked closely with the Republican leadership of the House of Representatives on this timeline.”

But the leaders did not expect this. It came on a day that highlighted Republican disarray and division, as Speaker Mike Johnson pushed through a $1.2 trillion spending bill that sparked an uprising on his right flank and at least one of its members to begin the process of declaring of a vote to impeach him.

After Representative Ken Buck, Republican of Colorado, surprised Mr. Johnson this month with the announcement that he would soon resign, the speaker said he did not expect more members to follow suit.

“I think, I hope and believe that this is the end of exits for the time being,” he said less than two weeks ago.

Mr. Gallagher, one of three Republicans who voted against the ouster of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas, announced after that vote that he did not intend to seek another term — already an unusual move for a young committee chairman. It reflected the frustration many Republicans in the House of Representatives felt in what they described as a dysfunctional governing body.

Mr. Gallagher’s early departure will make it even more difficult for Mr. Johnson to pursue legislation that cannot deliver Democratic votes, and will give any Republican more leverage as the chairman tries to guide his uncontrollable majority through an election year.

On Friday, for example, with a majority of Republicans opposed to the spending measure, Mr. Johnson was forced to rely primarily on Democratic votes to pass it.

The current makeup of the House of Representatives leaves Republicans with virtually no buffer to deal with the inevitable absences caused by illness, travel delays, weddings, funerals and unforeseen events that could keep their members away from voting.

Next month, Democrats are likely to fill a safe seat occupied by Rep. Brian Higgins of New York, who left Congress to become president of Shea’s Performing Arts Center. In late spring and early summer, Republicans are likely to fill two solidly Republican seats vacated by Reps. Bill Johnson of Ohio, who left Congress to become president of Youngstown State University, and Kevin McCarthy, who resigned from his post. seat in California. late last year after he was removed from the speakership.

Mr. Gallagher’s announcement came on the same day that Mr. Buck was packing up the last of his belongings in his bare office on his last day in the House of Representatives, following his recent announcement that he too would shorten his final term.

A NEW Yorker has said navigating the city’s dating scene is not for the faint of heart.

She tried it, survived and now has stories about dining out there.

TikTok user Taylor had a strange dating experienceCredit: TikTok/paretay

But her second date with a man turned strange when he had doubts about the bill.

After they finished eating, she put her cash contribution on the table, but his next move just gave her the creeps.

As a result, this romance was doomed and there would be no third date.

Taylor Pare (@paretay) has 63,000 followers on TikTok, where she shares her love for “storytimes and spilling tea NYC.”

She shared her unhappy dating story in her after but was aware that it could be controversial.

“I think I just got the plague from the guy I’m seeing,” she said.

But commenters were divided over who was right in this dating scenario.

After her experience, she said the New York dating scene was not for the faint of heart.

She had already been on a few dates with this man, but when the check arrived, “he was acting very unreliable.”

It didn’t seem like he was splashing the money. Although she was willing to pay her half, she still felt that it was cheap.

‘I’m unemployed, he has a lucrative job. He ordered a lot of things from the menu that I can’t eat,” she complained.

Dear Deidre: Understanding the impact of ghosting

But when the bill came, Taylor said he barely acknowledged it.

However, she put down her half, $20. When it looked like he wasn’t paying his share, she said there was no cash left in her bag.

Only then, she said, did he pull out his Platinum American Express card and give her $20 back.

“He should at least give his half after making me buy the second round on the first date. It’s super bland and unappealing,” she said.

But she worried she was being superficial because she thought it was a “deal breaker.”

There was a huge response to her post with over 3,000 comments.

And it was a very lively comments section.

Dating etiquette

Tradition still plays a role in the dating game that still exists, but the rules are changing. Here are some guidelines

Who pays the bill:

  • The person who initiated the date usually pays for both meals
  • If the date is successful, offer to pay for the next one
  • If it reaches a third date, agree to split the bills down the middle for future meetings
  • If your date insists on always paying, that’s their choice, but let them know you’d like to treat them occasionally as well

‘I don’t want anyone who isn’t generous. Generous with his money, time, everything,” said one.

‘It’s cheap, but so are you. The bill was $40, which isn’t a huge amount,” a second person thought.

“If he knows you’re unemployed and is still trying to get you paid, that’s a huge red mark in my opinion,” a third person wrote.

“From day one, I shared every bill with my friend. Taking money out of the equation allowed me to see my attraction more clearly and deeply,” was one viewer’s experience.

“Deal breaker is the unreliable behavior and zero communication,” wrote another.

Oleksii Yukov spends many of his nights dodging drones, navigating minefields and hoping not to be targeted by Russian artillery as he races to collect the remains of fallen soldiers from the battlefield.

In just three shattered tree lines around the devastated village of Klishchiivka outside Bakhmut, where Ukrainian and Russian forces have engaged in see-saw battles for more than a year, he collected 300 bodies. Almost all of them were Russians, he said, left behind in a maelstrom of violence where the struggle to stay alive often outweighs concern for the dead.

Mr. Yusov has been collecting bodies from the bloody fields and battered villages of eastern Ukraine for a decade. He is now the head of a group of civilian volunteers called Platsdarm, and has witnessed more deaths than he would like to remember.

But as Russia continues a slow offensive with major human consequences, Yusov says the toll is still shocking.

He said he found bodies stacked four or five deep in trenches. Men who died wearing summer uniforms are buried beneath men in winter clothing.

Sometimes Russian soldiers take the bodies, put them in large pits and “wrap them up because you can’t breathe around them,” he said, referring to the stench. “They don’t know what to do with it.”

The Russian army’s willingness to sacrifice thousands of soldiers in a blunt attempt to seize territory has been a defining feature of the war’s final year – reflected in the steep losses that marked the capture of two Ukrainian cities: Bakhmut last May And Avdiivka in February.

To get a sense of the scale of the death, The New York Times traveled with Mr. Yukov’s team of body collectors, interviewed Ukrainian soldiers about life in the midst of death and embedded with military drone units that carried out a unedited footage of some of the deadliest massacres. grounds.

The best time to retrieve the bodies is in bad weather, with fog and rain, Mr. Yukov said, because Russian drones do not fly into them. He likes to get close to where he needs to be at night, but the final move must be timed very carefully. It is often canceled.

Seen from drones over battlefields in eastern Ukraine, Russian soldiers can be seen frozen at the moment of their death, motionless on frost-covered, cratered fields. They are scattered on top of destroyed armored vehicles or next to destroyed tanks.

Many Ukrainian soldiers have also died in the bloody battles that take place every day, but Mr Yukov said most of the bodies he collects are Russians left behind.

“We are dealing with the reality of war, not war on paper,” he said. “I say specifically what I see: for every five or six bodies of Ukrainian soldiers, we find almost 80 Russian bodies.”

The Russian Defense Ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

With U.S. military support cut off and Ukrainian forces running low on ammunition, more Ukrainian soldiers are dying under brutal attacks from a better-equipped, more-strong army.

“Over the past two to three months we have noticed serious changes,” he said, referring to the growing number of victims in Ukraine.

Finding the dead is not always possible because fighting takes place along the front, sometimes for weeks or months. But repeated visits to areas near the most violent hotspots – along with the testimonies of Ukrainian soldiers, medics and volunteers tending to the dead, the accounts of Russian military bloggers and visual images released by soldiers on both sides – provide a searing window . what death looks like on the battlefield.

After Mr. Yukov collects the bodies, he takes them, if they are civilians, to the local morgue. If they are soldiers from either army, he hands them over to the Ukrainian army, with whom he works closely.

The Russians’ remains could be exchanged for the remains of fallen Ukrainian soldiers – one of the rare issues on which the warring armies still cooperate.

There are no reliably accurate estimates of the number of Ukrainian and Russian soldiers killed in the past two years. President Volodymyr Zelensky said last month that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

He also claimed that Russia had suffered 500,000 casualties, including 180,000 troops killed. His figures cannot be independently verified.

Mr Zelensky’s accounting of the Ukrainian victims differs sharply from that of the Ukrainian victims estimates from US officialswhich last summer said nearly 70,000 Ukrainians had been killed and 100,000 to 120,000 injured.

In Russia, according to a well-documented Soviet-era playbook, the staggering amount of losses has been carefully hidden from public view by an authoritarian government that controls major media outlets.

Estimates from various Western intelligence agencies put the number of dead and wounded for Russia at somewhere between 300,000 and 350,000, with most estimates of well over 100,000 dead.

As the ranks of the Russian army have been strengthened by conscripts from poor villages, ethnic minorities have been forced to enlist and convicts released from prison in exchange for fights in Ukraine, the Kremlin has so far managed to prevent the costs of its war from hitting the most privileged parts of society.

“I think people understand, but are afraid of the truth,” Mr. Yukov said of the Russian public. “It is easier for them to believe in propaganda,” he said. “But what we see are enormous losses on the Russian side, catastrophically large.”

With tens of thousands of Russian and Ukrainian soldiers killed in the past two years, the toll can feel overwhelming and abstract. But for the soldiers at the front, death is part of everyday life.

Ukrainian soldiers sometimes struggle to put into words what it is like to kill wave after wave of attackers, only to see more come after them.

Junior Sergeant Pavlo Zinenko, 36, was maintaining fiber optic cables when the Russians invaded. He rushed to join the 128th Territorial Defense Brigade after seeing the atrocities Russian troops committed in Bucha.

“I was willing to give my life to ensure that no more civilians would die on our side,” he said. “But over time, when you see so much death, especially when your close friends die in front of your eyes, it really breaks a person.”

“Death is not frightening,” he said. “It’s just sickening.”

When he encounters dead Russian soldiers, he said, he has “no feelings, no emotions.”

“The only thought that comes to mind is that if they’re dead, that means they can’t kill anyone else here,” he said. “Death is generally not a pleasant phenomenon, and when you are surrounded by it, the impact is even greater.”

Vitalii Sholudko, a 20-year-old machine gunner with the 128th, said he didn’t think about death until a Russian missile crashed into a building near his home in Dnipro two years ago.

“I saw my mother crying, and my sister,” he said. “What can a child do? There was nothing I could do but take up arms and defend my family.”

Now he has slept in trenches full of dead Russian soldiers, he said.

“We slept, ate and kept watch next to the bodies,” he said. The battle was too fierce to worry about moving it.

“There was no time to think, and you couldn’t afford to think about someone dying or feeling sorry for them,” he said. “It’s you or them.”

Mr Yukov has been collecting the dead from the Donbas battlefields for more than a decade, working on both sides of the front line until the full-scale invasion in 2022 made it impossible to get to the Russian side. As a civilian, he does not have to adhere to military restrictions on discussing Ukrainian victims.

His dedication to his mission – regardless of what uniform the dead wore during their lives – has earned him the widespread respect and trust of the Ukrainian military. His work is funded by private donations.

Mr. Yukov, who lost an eye last year after a mine exploded during a mission, said he is often asked why he risks his life to recover bodies.

“It is important for me to take them all home because we are human, and we must remember to remain human,” he said.

Knowing that his work provides grieving families with a small measure of comfort and some closure helps him sleep at night. But something deeper drives him.

“When we talk about humanity and human rights,” he said, “we must remember that even the dead have rights.”

Liubov Sholudko contributed reporting from eastern Ukraine. Natalia Novosolova And Anastasia Kuznietsova reporting contributed.

In the middle of a Canadian city lies an abandoned shopping center that serves as a time capsule for the ’90s, as a fascinating documentary reveals.

Filmmaker Jake Williams was granted access to the City Center Mall in Hamilton, Ontario, and he took a thorough walk around to examine its innards.

He was shocked to discover that the mall – which opened in 1990 after a CA$150 million investment and closed in 2022 – appeared frozen in time, with the interior “completely preserved and completely unchanged.”

In one scene, he enters a former office, where he finds clothes in a closet, photos lying around and a retro computer on the desk. As he turns the camera around, he says, “Oh my God, has anyone been here since 1990?”

At the discount store, Jake discovers that many unsold items have been thrown away, while he also notices a ‘wall of shame’ behind the cash registers with photos of unruly customers still taped up.

In another part of the building, Jake discovers an office space that was used as a call center, with cubicles still intact and decorated with headsets.

Meanwhile, another corner of the mall was converted into a gym to attract customers. However, no machine was left behind.

Regarding the condition of the building, Jake says that the “disrepair doesn’t look that bad, but when you look in certain corners it starts to show that this building has only just been here.”

He notes that there is water damage in some parts of the structure, with the “paint starting to peel.”

His images also show that some interiors, such as the elevator doors, have been vandalized with graffiti.

After the shopping center closed, there were ambitions to demolish it to make way for a $1 billion mixed-use residential and retail development, but plans are currently on hold.

The developer who bought the abandoned mall, IN8 Developments, said CBC in December 2023 that it had “halted the project and demolition until the real estate market improves.”

Company Chairman Darryl Firsten offered hope to the city’s residents, adding, “In the meantime, we will continue to refine and improve our design.” It will be a great project.’

After complaining, she didn’t expect the handwritten response she got back.

she said in a TikTok video about her @maartinapanchetti account: “We sent a letter to our neighbors with a polite request to make less noise (they are a family with children) and possibly not to play the piano too early in the morning.

“This is how they answered…”

The note was in a yellow envelope that said “to the neighbors” in childish handwriting, with a sticker showing a cartoon globe.

Martina showed herself to be crying as she revealed a photo of the children’s handwritten letter.

It read: “Dear neighbors,

“Thank you for your kind message.

“We realize that we can be loud and mischievous at times.

“We started learning piano and our teachers tell us to practice every day, but we sincerely apologize if we don’t take into account the times of day and weekends.

“To be honest, mom tells us not to play in the morning and that she also wants to sleep on weekends.

Neighbors are always stealing my parking space – so I came up with a very creative solution to stop them

“We promise YOU and we promise our mother that they will try to be more attentive.

“Please accept our national Azeri sweets as a token of apology! Ps not nut-free!”

They signed the messages from ‘your noisy neighbors’.

Martina seemed wracked with guilt over her complaint after receiving the sweet message from the children.

She added: “They also sent their national sweets.

“We are in tears.”

Martina said she felt so bad that she wanted to send a gift in return.

She added: “We are on our way to cook them some Italian sweets.”

Her video has clearly struck a chord online as it has racked up over 104,000 likes.

One said: “This is parenthood.”

A second added: “This would make me want to put together a sorry basket for them.”

However, one joked: “Plot twist, that’s a passive-aggressive tone from the dad.”

Scarlette Douglas has admitted she was left in tears during a recent hospital visit during her ongoing fertility journey.

The 37-year-old A Place In The Sun presenter has frozen her eggs to boost her chances of having children.

The star took to Instagram on Wednesday to share how being in hospital for an egg retrieval procedure left her feeling emotional.

She told her followers: ‘Well I’ll be honest, I felt very uncomfortable going in today ladies.

‘The trigger injection really made the bloating and lower abdominal pain worse, and the closer it got to egg retrieval, the more uncomfortable I felt. I had to sit on my left side most of the day!’

Scarlette told how she got teary before the procedure because no one could accompany her.

She wrote: ‘Everything was well explained and I felt in good hands. I did shed a tear just before the anesthesia took effect, mainly because I was scared and nervous, but also because you have to do it all alone; no one can come in with you.

“Anyway, the best night’s sleep I’ve ever had, came out, was in pain, so they gave me some more pain relief, then hung around for about an hour and a half and just as I was ready to leave the recovery room, I was told about my 24 eggs collected, 19 of which were viable for freezing!!!!! I was over the moon!

‘That was more than I could ever have imagined and that’s why I was and am so happy that it has all been worth it so far.’

It comes after Scarlette was rushed to A&E earlier this month after experiencing ‘strange numbness and tingling’.

While getting ready for an awards ceremony, Scarlette explained how she “freaked out” by Googling her symptoms.

In the clip shared to Instagram, she began: ‘I’m hosting an awards ceremony today, which means on my break here I’m running to the toilet and glamorously doing one of my injections.

‘I have noticed over the past few days that I am getting a slight numbing tingling sensation in my left arm and a little bit in my left leg.’

She continued, “It feels like a dead arm, a dead leg, you know when you sleep on something funny.

“So at first I thought that was probably it, but then Dr. Google definitely scared me and made me think it could be something worse.”

In another update, Scarlette added: ‘So I called the clinic today, they said I needed to go to A&E asap. Just to double check that everything is okay, so I’ll do that tonight after the awards ceremony.

‘Make sure I don’t have any blood clots and also make sure there is no ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

‘Now I only had a scan on Tuesday and it showed that everything was actually fine. So I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about, but if you’ve been through this process and if you’ve noticed that too, please let me know.”

Scarlette is freezing her eggs after admitting that ’37 came so quickly’ and hopes to protect her ‘future offspring’.

Freezing eggs means going through the IVF process, which typically takes two to three weeks.

This includes taking medications to stimulate egg production, and also to help the eggs mature.

She said: ‘I learned so much about my eggs and the process of vitrification at the @barbadosivf. I really wish this was something I was taught when I was younger, or at least talked about in more depth.

“Yes, my aunt and friends had encouraged me to do so in my younger years, but I didn’t think for a second that it would be something I had to think about, let alone think about at the time, but who would have thought that 37 would still come so soon?!”

The TV presenter added: ‘I really should have taken action when they first said it all those years ago.

‘I cannot turn back the clock now, but I can move forward as quickly as possible (armed of course with the new knowledge I now have) and not wait another minute to protect my future descendants.’

The last time he kicked a ball here, in November 2020, Gomez suffered a horrific knee injury that saw him loaded into an ambulance and taken to hospital for emergency surgery.

Gomez was ruled out for nine months but it is only now, almost three and a half years later and thanks to his good form on Merseyside in various positions, that the south Londoner has truly rediscovered the form he enjoyed before disaster struck.

When you consider that it was also at the St George’s Park restaurant where he was involved in an altercation with Raheem Sterling in 2019, you can see why this place has a negative vibe for him.

But perhaps this could be the Anfield star’s new happy place.
The 26-year-old certainly has a chance to secure a place in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man squad for Euro 2024.

Gomez hopes to complete his eleven international matches at home against Brazil on Saturday.

The injury to his left patellar tendon in 2020 was the FOURTH serious setback in his career, after a KO of the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee, a damaged Achilles tendon and a broken leg.

And Gomez said: “The last time I saw Gareth here I was lying in bed waiting for the ambulance.

“It was tough and it’s a big part of my journey that I don’t shy away from.

“We were playing an 11 versus 11 match when I got the injury. It was quite unique: it was a patellar tendon rupture.

“I was alone. I was just going to play a pass. I planted my foot and then. . . it tore.

“It was quite horrific. My kneecap was halfway down my leg.

“A lot of it is blurry because it was a little painful. From then on it was a big part of my life, probably the most difficult point in my career, because of the way it happened.

“I moved past it and a big part of my application and my motivation comes from working to get back.

“I don’t want to lose that because it’s made me who I am. It’s definitely changed my application in terms of everything: recovery, working in the gym and so on. I’m at peace with what happened.

The last time I saw Gareth here, I was lying in bed waiting for the ambulance.

Joe Gomes

“I’d be lying if I said it didn’t take a psychological toll as I left here quite abruptly in an ambulance from the training ground.”

Asked about the emotions swirling in his head as he stepped onto that same training pitch again on Tuesday, he said: “From the outside, obviously no one had realised, but it was a bit surreal.

“I think there was of course an underlying trauma that I can now draw a line under.

“So even though I was warming up on that field, it was nice to feel like I could close that chapter.

Joe Gomez: Angry so testing

JOE GOMEZ says he is looking forward to returning to Wembley with England despite being booed during his last appearance in front of Three Lions fans.

The Liverpool defender was left shocked and upset after being booed as a substitute against Montenegro on November 14, 2019.

Three days earlier he had suffered an eye injury after a clash with Raheem Sterling at the English hotel – and this came 24 hours after the pair had a failure in a match between Liverpool and Manchester City.

Asked about the booing, Gomez said: “It was testing. You never want this to happen in front of your own audience. It was a scenario that I moved on from.

“I didn’t delve too deeply into it or let it consume me too much. I understood it. Obviously it wasn’t great. I’d be lying if I said otherwise. But it is what it is. Part of football.

“I’m looking forward to being in front of the fans and playing again. Wembley is such a special stadium.”

Sterling had collided with Gomez at Anfield in the Reds’ 3-1 win over his former club City.

Tempers flared again the next day as the pair joined international duty, although Gomez attempted to shake hands with the 6ft 4in Sterling from behind.

Winger Sterling then asked the 6ft 1in defender if he was “still the big man” and the pair tussled with each other.

Gomez received three more international matches, but they were all played behind closed doors due to Covid.

Despite his impressive club form this season, the centre-back did not expect to be in the squad for the friendlies against Brazil and Belgium and would go on holiday to Dubai.

“Everyone gets injured, that’s part of the game, but because it happened so suddenly and never had a chance to come back, it was difficult to deal with.

“It meant a lot to be in the mix, be with the guys and close that chapter.

“So yeah, it played a big role in my thoughts and gave me an appreciation for being here and a different perspective because I know the downside and how difficult that can be. It is a privilege to be here.”

This season, Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp has played Gomez in every position in the back four – and even as a defensive midfielder.

With England struggling profoundly at centre-backs in terms of strength, his inclusion is not only deserved, but logical.

Gomez added: “I’m really enjoying my football at Liverpool. We had a good phase at the club when we won the Premier League and so on, but this year has been different for me as I have played in different places.

“I appreciate the moment and I don’t worry about where I’ve been or what I have to do. It’s the most important thing to be here now.”

Since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has repeatedly spoken of the need to overthrow Hamas, but he has done little to address the power vacuum that would emerge – especially after Israeli forces withdrew withdrawn.

That is already evident in Gaza City, where a deadly battle at the territory’s largest hospital complex stretched into a third day on Wednesday after the Israeli army said the resurgence of Hamas fighters had forced it to return to the site where it had first been stormed. November.

The army said on Wednesday it had killed dozens of militants during the operation at Al-Shifa hospital and interrogated or arrested hundreds of people, while Hamas said it had caused “deaths and injuries” among Israeli forces; neither account could be independently confirmed. The crossfire endangers displaced people seeking shelter on the site, as well as medical teams, patients and local residents.

Former Israeli security officials are divided over how to tackle the growing anarchy in northern Gaza, but many agree that until the government has a detailed, workable plan for how the enclave will be governed and made secure created, it will be impossible to chart a path towards a more stable future. And they said Mr. Netanyahu should have developed such a plan long ago.

“It is a big mistake” not to have a government plan now, said Gen. Gadi Shamni, a retired commander of the Israeli army’s Gaza division. “It may take months or even years to create a successful alternative, but we need to start moving things in that direction.”

“We will continue to do these back-and-forth operations for much longer than necessary,” he said. “Every time the IDF leaves an area, Hamas will return.”

Mr. Netanyahu proposed a plan last month that called for Israeli security control of Gaza after the war and the “management of civil affairs and maintenance of law and order,” based on unnamed “local stakeholders with administrative experience” and without ties with terrorist groups. such as Hamas, which took control of Gaza in 2007. It seeks the elimination of the United Nations agency, which is a major provider of social services and employment in Gaza, without detailing what, if anything, would fill the slack.

The prime minister’s office said the plan “reflects a broad public consensus on the objectives of the war and on replacing Hamas rule in Gaza with a civilian alternative.”

But many experts said it was vague and an unrealistic attempt to delay serious action.

“Lives have turned into hell,” said Talal Okal, a political analyst from Gaza City who fled northern Gaza in October and is now in the United Arab Emirates. “Netanyahu and his partners do not want to answer the question of the day after the war.”

Mr Netanyahu has roundly rejected calls from the Biden administration and others for an overhauled Palestinian Authority – which now has limited governing powers in the West Bank – to also govern Gaza. Many of his allies oppose unified control of the two areas as a step toward a Palestinian state.

Yet there are no easy options for governing Gaza, Israeli security analysts say. Many Palestinians view the Palestinian Authority as tainted by corruption and mismanagement, and many Israelis also distrust it.

Some Israeli military officials and politicians have called on Israel to occupy Gaza after the war, at least temporarily, but this has been widely opposed by the international community. It would impose enormous restrictions on Palestinian freedoms and drain Israel’s resources. How Hamas and other factions would confront an occupation would also pose a challenge.

Other former Israeli officials say Mr Netanyahu must now introduce a governing body in areas where the army has withdrawn, to prevent Hamas from rebuilding itself and to prevent chaos from spreading. They argue that Israeli forces would most likely have to continue returning to parts of Gaza, as they did at Al-Shifa, and that without a more comprehensive plan they would have to continue fighting a prolonged war of attrition.

General Shamni said Netanyahu’s position so far reflects the fact that his government is dependent on hardline coalition partners who fiercely oppose Palestinian statehood.

“The most important thing for him is his political survival,” General Shamni said.

Other retired Israeli officials have argued that the Palestinian Authority is too weak to govern Gaza, but they agree that the status quo of leaving areas unmanaged is unsustainable. Instead, Israel should first fully occupy Gaza and then try to introduce an alternative governing body, they argue.

Michael Milshtein, a former Israeli military intelligence officer, said the attack on Al-Shifa this week showed the need for a greater Israeli security presence in the north.

“People ask: haven’t we already cleaned Shifa? We didn’t do that at all,” Mr. Milshtein said. “If you don’t stay there within five minutes, they will come back,” he said, referring to Hamas.

The Gaza Health Ministry has condemned the Israeli raid as a “crime against health institutions,” and humanitarian organizations expressed concern about the situation in the complex, which, along with its surroundings, housed thousands of people.

Full occupation of Gaza would require Israel to increase its military forces there and devote more resources to providing services to the Palestinians. At the same time, the army is clashing with Hezbollah along the border with Lebanon, and the mobilization of reservists has put pressure on the Israeli economy.

Occupation would also run counter to international calls for Israel, including from President Biden, not to take such action.

For the Palestinians, this would mean that the Israeli army would retain full control over the cities and entrances and exits of Gaza.

Hamas would likely suffer under such a scenario, with less room to maneuver as Israeli soldiers could more easily suppress the group, but it is not clear exactly how Hamas and other groups would respond. Decades of Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories have not eliminated the armed militant groups that oppose its presence.

With experts warning of a looming famine in Gaza, longstanding debates over post-war governance are coming at the expense of Gazans, said Mr. Okal, the Gaza City-based political analyst.

“Complete chaos has ensued and the people are paying the price,” he said. “But what can they do? All they can do is raise their hands and pray to God.”
