Fernando Tapia Vera was exploring the jungle with tourists when they realized they were not alone.

A large male jaguar stared at the group from just meters away, before charging towards them.

The group was taken by surprise as it was difficult to see the huge beast behind the bushes.

You can hear onlookers making loud, animalistic growls in an attempt to scare the large beast away.

But the enraged big cat only stops for a split second before suddenly pouncing on Fernando again.

Fortunately, the attack is fleeting and Fernando only gets a few scratches on his legs from his claws.

He grabs a machete and starts chopping away the brush to scare the cat.

As it finally retreats into the jungle, one of the group can be heard exclaiming “F*cking hell” in relief.

Fernando said: “I’ve always wanted to see one, but not like this.

‘ Miraculously, I only suffered a few scratches.

“I thought he was going to leave, but no, he stayed for a few more minutes.

“It seemed like hours before he got bored and turned away and we never saw him again.”

All members of the group survived the horrific encounter unscathed and continued their journey.

The jaguar disappeared into the bushes and was no longer seen by tourists.

Fernando said: “It was a unique and memorable meeting. In the end it was just a nice memory.

“The jaguar left and we also set off. But of course I am more alert than ever.”

Biologist Gustavo Figueiroa told Latin American media that the group should have left quietly after spotting the big cat.

He said: “It’s a bluff attack because he jumps and moves forward just to intimidate.

“And that’s the most common thing with jaguars: they give a warning signal to stay away if they feel cornered, but since they stayed there, he went after them.”

But after the jaguar attacked them, he said the group used the right tactics to intimidate the beast.

Figueiroa said: “They stepped back, raised their hands and made noise.

“In short, they have deterred it and shown that they are in the minority.”

This comes after shocked zoo staff discovered a half-eaten body in a tiger’s cage after a visitor apparently jumped inside.

The chilling discovery was made at the Sherbagh Zoo in Bahawalpur, Pakistan, after staff spotted one of three tigers with a shoe in its mouth.
