Nearly three-quarters of Brits plan to fly to a hot spot this summer, but only 10 per cent of searches are for the cheapest week of the school holiday.

With around 31 percent of those still unbooked, Skyscanner has shared its findings based on the 80 billion prices searched daily on its system.

It shows that the first two weeks of the school holidays are the most popular, despite being the most expensive time to travel.

That is why, according to the price comparison site, travelers can save an average of about 16 percent by traveling in the last week of the holiday.

This would save up to £220 for a family of four.

And for those who are flexible with their times, traveling on the less popular days of the week can save you about 15 percent.

Sunday is usually the cheapest day to go abroad, meaning families not only spend less money, but also enjoy a quieter airport.

A Skyscanner spokesperson says it really pays to do your research on the cheapest and best days to travel this summer, especially as 84 per cent of those surveyed say they would be willing to change their dates to save money.

In comparison, the study shows that a family of four saves an average of £372 if they fly to Spain on a Tuesday instead of a Friday for their return journey in July and August.

And from which airport you depart is also important.

Northerners crossing the border into Scotland can save a significant chunk; for example, return flights to Alicante from Edinburgh (22-29 August) cost an average of £170 per person, while from Newcastle they work out at £218.

Meanwhile, Skyscanner reports that holidaymakers can save £226 on a trip to Spain for a family of four on return flights to Malaga between August 15 and 22 by traveling from London Gatwick (£219 per person) instead of London Southend (£276 per person). ).

Laura Lindsay, Skyscanner’s travel trends and destination expert, said: ‘Our research shows that more than a third of Britons are making cuts elsewhere, including fewer meals out and less takeaways and coffee, to save for their summer holidays, but are less likely to shop around for holidays as they would for their weekly groceries or clothes.”

Ms Linsdsay added that ‘we encourage all travelers to take note of our smart tips’.

The research coincides with the launch of Skyscanner’s ‘Savings Generator’ tool, which the company says ‘helps travelers save big this summer’.
