Gareth Whitton was crowned the winner of Dessert Masters 2023 in an emotional grand final episode on Tuesday evening.

He walks away with the title of Australia’s first ever Dessert Master and $100,000 in prize money.

The pastry chef received the highest score from judges Melissa Leong and Amaury Guichon for his final dessert, beating Jess Liemantara and Reynold Poernomo.

‘I never actually expected that I would be here in the final. I supported myself in the cook. I mean, all credit to the boys,” he said after his victory.

“We gave it everything we had, and… ..You know, it’s surreal that I finally got through it.”

Reynold told Judge Melissa that although his time was shorter this time, it was much more meaningful.

“Every time I’ve been here, it’s definitely led me down a path and a career that I really love and…Enjoy being there and being a part of it, and I’m so grateful and so grateful ,” he said.

However, Gareth’s victory did not go down well with viewers, many of whom took to social media to express their frustrations.

Fans expressed their dismay, with tweets ranging from supportive ‘YAYYYYYYYYYYY well done Gareth. You’re a good person AND now the Dessert Masters Champion!!!’ to the downright furious “Boooo!” echo over X, formally known as Twitter.

Reynold, who has been a fan favorite since his first appearance on the culinary scene, once again missed out on the top spot, causing an uproar among his loyal followers.

Disappointed tweets like ‘Oh no Reynold. Still my favorite dessert chef in the world” and “Reynold lost AGAIN?!?” shows how deeply the viewers have invested in his journey.

Some fans questioned the show’s final challenge, feeling it was a disappointment and not up to the standard they expected from Dessert Masters.

Others humorously suggested a Reynolds-centric spinoff to prevent him from losing again.

Amid the uproar, accusations of a “rigged” competition also surfaced, with some suggesting jealousy played a role in the outcome.
