The cause of death surrounding a man found unconscious in his backyard continues to plague investigators.

Tony Pope was found at 2.30am on Saturday by his father, who called triple zero, at their home in Waterford West, 30 kilometers south of the Brisbane CBD.

Paramedics rushed to the house and tried to resuscitate the 44-year-old but were unable to save him and a crime scene was established.

“The circumstances surrounding the death are simply unexplained at this time,” Detective Inspector Chris Knight told reporters.

“There are aspects of the gentleman's death that we are simply not entirely satisfied with, and while those questions remain, we have a responsibility to him and his family to try to find the best solution.”

Mr Pope lived at the unit in Kingston Road with his elderly father and two young children, who were there at the time.

His body is expected to remain at the scene while authorities, including homicide, forensic and intelligence teams, investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

Inspector Knight said officers had spoken to Mr Pope's immediate family and neighbours, who gave 'varying reports'.

Police have also contacted the deceased man's friends and other relatives for information that may help the investigation.

After his body is released from the scene, a post-mortem examination of Mr Pope's remains will take place to try to determine the cause of death.
