A family living on the road has made things a little more comfortable by having a composting toilet installed in their van.
They said it was a relief not to have to wheel their poop through a park to the dump.
However, the concept of composting toilets appears to be foreign to their followers.
They can’t believe their van doesn’t stink.
De Rosa (@the.rosa.reno) made a valiant attempt to explain.
But some commentators refused to be convinced, saying this was a comfort break too far for them.
Rosa, her husband and their toddler daughter live on the road in their converted van.
More than 26,000 followers watched how they describe their lives outside the mainstream.
Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, they built their home on wheels to try to live a more sustainable life.
It’s not always a picnic and every now and then the toilet needs to be emptied.
But it’s not as bad as it sounds, and despite commentators’ concerns about lingering bad odors, there is no odor.
“Why haven’t you emptied your toilet in six months?” she wondered inside her after.
There is little privacy around this toilet.
It’s in full view of the rest of the van.
But, she says, “it’s for emergencies only,” and everyone leaves the bus when they have a bowel movement.
Nevertheless, it still takes a deep breath to empty it.
“I’m not going to lie, it was nice not having to drive our poop through a caravan section to the dump,” she said.
“It’s a compost toilet. It’s quite dirty now,” she added.
Compost toilets USA explained how they worked.
“Modern composting toilets provide an environmentally friendly and odor-free way to deal with human waste,” they said.
“A true compost toilet produces a safe, non-toxic end product that can be placed on ornamental plants, and no toxic sludge is produced,” she added.
One commenter also had a composting toilet.
“I have a compost toilet in my house and it has never been emptied,” she says.
“That’s actually a great way to decompose your waste,” said another.
But some would never be convinced.
“I don’t poop in the open like that,” said one viewer.
“That’s definitely going to stink,” said another.
