New Delhi: The United World Wrestling, the global governing body for the sport, has lifted the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India with immediate effect. UWW had provisionally suspended the WFI on August 23 last year after the Indian body failed to hold elections on time.

The UWW Disciplinary Chamber ruled that it had sufficient grounds to impose the provisional suspension on the body, as the situation within the federation continued for at least six months.

The UWW office met on February 9 to assess, among other things, the suspension and, taking into account all elements and information, decided to lift the suspension under the following conditions:

The WFI must reconvene the elections for its Athletes Commission. Candidates for this committee may be active athletes or retired for no more than four years. The voters will be exclusively athletes. These elections will take place during senior competitions or national championships where this operation may take place, but no later than July 1, 2024.

The WFI must immediately provide UWW with written assurances that all wrestlers are eligible to participate without discrimination in all WFI events, especially competitions for the Olympic Games and other major national and international events. This non-discrimination also applies to the three athletes who protested against alleged misdeeds by the former president.

UWW remains in contact with the wrestlers and will contact them in the coming days.

This also means that Indian wrestlers will be able to compete under their country's flag at the next UWW event. Under the suspension, the Indian wrestlers had to compete under a UWW banner.
