The news is by your side.

I like how games force you to make hard choices, but some of them aren't fun

WE stole hundreds of handbags while playing Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden.

You collect leather and linen for this, but that is not of much use in the game.

We didn't steal handbags because of the resources they left behind, but because of the thrill of it. We made our own fun.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is an action RPG developed by Don't Nod, known for games such as Life is Strange.

And like Life is Strange, Banishers gives you a number of choices, but instead of focusing on these, we decided to steal bags.

Main character Antea Duarte dies very early on, and one of your first decisions determines whether she can come back to life or not.

You have the choice to kill everyone in town and let her go, or bring her back through the slaughter of innocents.

The city of New Eden is plagued by famine and disease, and although the people appear fine, it is only natural that they are put out of their misery.

Both the big and small decisions have consequences, but if you don't connect with the characters, you won't mind killing them en masse.

Although this decision seems so tough at first, by the end you can go back and erase everything, just like Life is Strange did.

But that was one of the weakest parts of the story at the time, because nothing you had done up to that point really mattered.

There's plenty to like about Banishers, from the visuals to the mythos of this new world, but it just doesn't go deep enough.

It has too much of one and not the other. There's too much dialogue with too little substance, too many battles with too little depth, too much exploration with too little payoff.

When it comes to the combat, the mix between playing as Red and the ghost of Antea feels awkward.

It was a cumbersome and frustrating process, with our heroes switching places on a whim during battle to make the most of their unique abilities.

It sounds good on paper, but in practice the execution was simply not satisfactory.

When it comes to the choices Banishers gave us, we made the choice to make our own fun by stealing from the dead.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is fine, but in a year with so many excellent games, it's probably not worth your time.
