A NEW “daddy army” of retired doctors, nurses and medical staff must be called in to tackle the NHS crisis, Liz Truss has said.
She spoke out amid stories of pensioners having to wait up to 40 hours for ambulances after a fall.
Ms Truss said: “It's about making sure we have a culture where we encourage people to work in the NHS.
'During Covid we have successfully brought people back from retirement to help.
'And what I'm interested in is how can we do that as we face these critical issues within the NHS?
“Because [there are] There are a lot of fantastic people who have worked in healthcare who can help.”
She said she would make tackling waiting times in the NHS a “top priority”. And Britons should be able to get an appointment with their GP and dentist, she promised.
She also pledged to “fix the problems in social care” to ease pressure on hospitals.
